I wish the world would sound as perky as Liza Minnelli !

I just listened to Liza Minelli's interview on NPR's Saturday Morning Edition . The first thing that struck me about her was how incredibly cheerful she sounded. Then I thought about how a cheerful attitude is a conscious decision about how you live your life . Liza sounded vibrant and happy and determined she was going to have a great time today.. She is 62 and we all know her life story , which has had some pretty major ups and downs. This included being married to 4 rather questionable men- I totally get being married to Peter Allen after watching "The Boy from Oz" on Broadway with Hugh Jackman, but do NOT under stand that marriage to David something who used to manage Michael Jackson. Their over the top wedding was way too crazy and then when he divorced her because he claimed she beat him up was all about his craziness, not hers...

I'd like to think I always sound very cheerful when talking to my guests about Mermaid Cottages- when our guests are calling they are planning a happy time in their life - A BEACH GETAWAY! and I think those of us who live here should sound happy most of the time because we're so fortunate to live here!
So in honor of the spirit and determination of Liza with a Z, I'm going to sound very perky when you all call me and always remember I'm your link to the island!

Cupcakes, Guide Dogs, the inauguration - I do indeed have my obessions!

Just like I couldn't quite get off the topic of the Inauguration last week, and earlier last year it was cupcakes recipes, now it's my adorable guide dogs! This is a picture of Tony at work- how cute is this dog!!! I will be posting pictures once of week as we watch Tony grow up ...

Our new guide dog puppy has been born!

Little Tony arrived on November 8th, 2008 but I just received the information yesterday. Tony is a male black lab who has now been assigned to his puppy raiser who will start socializing him in preparation for his guide dog training! This is the first picture of many- showing Tony hard at work in the office of his Puppy Raiser waiting for the next part of the day. You'll be seeing lots and lots on this great dog!

Mermaid Cottages sponsors a guide dog puppy every year as our very small way of giving back and to honor our guests, home owners and mermaid team. We've been waiting for our puppy information all last year ( there was a back log of puppies waiting to be sponsored) so we haven't had a puppy to update everyone on regularly. But that is now changed!!!! The Southeast Guide Dog school www.guidedogs.org is outstanding and we can look forward to lots of pictures as Tony grows. The first 18 months are spent with their Puppy Raiser who's main responsibility is to socialize and make sure Tony is a very well behaved dog. He'll go everywhere with his person, learning and after his 18 Months with her, he'll go back to the school for his formal guide dog training. As long as everything goes smoothly, he'll be a guide dog. If for some reason he doesn't make it, most likely his career will be doing some other type of service work. Danny- my golden lab- was a career change dog as many of you all know.

Tony the dog is named after Tony Petrea, Junior to honor his life. Tony was a wonderful young man who died way too young. He was loved by so many of us here on Tybee , he loved animals and was a great help to me with several of my projects over the years. His birthday was yesterday - which I did not know until I took the picture of Tony to show his parents. They- like all of us will be following along with Tony's progress!
My friend, CJ from Marriott , is how I became involved with both raising guide dogs and sponsoring Guide Dogs. I'd like to share an email and YouTube video he put together last year when his most recent dog went off with his blind person. I tell CJ all the time he changed my life, without his guidance and assurance I never would have taken on my first puppy, never would have had Danny and Max in my life and now would never be sponsoring a guide dog yearly which truly does change a person's life! Here in CJ's own words....

"Over the past several years all of our friends have accommodated in to various degrees the inclusion of a dog whenever/wherever Bev and I go. Bev and I want each of you to know how much we appreciate your support and wanted to share with you this little video of Elvis that was made by his new owner, Wendy Slominsky of Millersville, PA. We met with her this past weekend for Elvis’ graduation ceremony in New York, and we were immediately taken with this wonderful woman and her husband. She and Elvis formed an instant bond, and they will undoubtedly have a fantastic life together.

When we returned from our trip, we received an email on Monday morning describing how after only a couple of days together, Elvis had successfully avoided a large 5 foot hole in the ground that wasn’t roped off, and was directly in Wendy’s path. A woman who witnessed Elvis safely guiding her around the obstacle stopped Wendy to explain what had just happened.

Bottom line is that without of lot of your direct and in-direct help, Bev and I wouldn’t be able to be as successful as we’ve been in raising these dogs. So we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for always welcoming our four legged friends as part of the Bev and CJ package."

The Island Wide Side Walk Sale a Huge Sucess!

What fun Saturday was! The island wide Sidewalk Sale had bargains galore everywhere! Over 30 businesses on Tybee offered great deals and the island was full of shoppers looking to score a big buy!

Personally I was THRILLED with my big find! I actually went to a shop I've never been to on the island- Underground Broadworks located in the Shop at Tybee Oaks- right by Huckapoos and close to SeaSide Sisters. Jim Stephens is a surfer/ custom surfboard builder and good ole Tybee character who has a shop where he not only sells surfing "stuff" but also creates and builds surf boards for people all over the world. He has the 4 foot rule - if the surf is 4 feet or higher, he hangs a sign on the door and heads out to surf the waters of Tybee.

Visit Jim's shop next visit to Tybee and in the meantime, visit his website. http://www.undergroundboardworks.com/

My big find was 2 pair of Sanuks. These are not shoes but sandals that look like shoes! Mary Elizabeth Canty has been wearing them for a year or so, she found them in a surf shop in Ft Lauderdale. I tried to find them when I was in California, but they were always sold out. Jim was having a huge one day sale- $15 per pair when they are normally $48 a pair! I bought two pairs and will be wearing them all spring and summer long. Super comfy, very cool ( hey they are worn by surfers all over the world) and best of all- great price! Visit their website as well because it's great fun http://www.sanuk.com
Great to meet you Jim, looking forward to visiting your shop on a regular basis!
The pictures show me wearing my new Sanuks. The second picture is to show off not only the shoes/ sandals, but also to show daughter Katie that no, my pants really are long enough. ( I've had enough lectures on wearing "mom jeans" that are not only too high waisted but too short! No Longer- I now buy Lucky Brand jeans- but more on that topic another blog!)

Attention Junkers and Dumpster Divers, Island Wide Yard Sale

Can you believe our good fortune? Our City is having an island wide yard sale on Saturday! Tables will be set up in various parts of the island, shops will having tables set up in front with clearance prices, people are cleaning out their garages, attics and basements to offer rock bottom, yours for the taking prices!

I know alot of you are followers of the Shabby Chic principal of decorating, the more worn and loved, the better it will look in your home! Personally I love the idea of recyling and finding new use for old things, so this is very appealing to me. So to have the entire island be one big place to find good junk is a dream come true!

See you on the island all day Saturday!

PS- my final moment of fame on MSNBC's Morning Joe- Willie just did his week in review this morning and of course their time at The Dubliner was front and center. And yes, you could see Sidney and myself just over the shoulder of of Mika during several of the interviews! Ah, such great memories!!!

Meanwhile back on Tybee, the Oysters are saving our island!

I'm back home! The dogs sure are happy! Max can't stop wagging his tail and is laying right beside me with his head in my lap, just sighing with happiness! His human is home!!! I love my little island, certainly loved my road trip, but happy camper to be home!

As I said in some of my blogs, now that we have a new leader of our country, it's time to get to work making our community and therefore our country, the absolute best we can be. We have work to do and we're ready to embrace this! Well , seems that even the oysters got the memo because they're doing their part to improve our island's waterways! Read this great article by writer Mary Landers on a very clever way our island 's public works department is using Mother Nature to help with some of man's mistakes! Great story!!!

Oysters to filter Tybee storm water
By Mary Landers
Created 2009-01-16 00:30

Tybee Island is recruiting new workers to help manage its storm water: oysters.
With help from the University of Georgia Shellfish Research Lab on Skidaway Island, Tybee plans to restore oyster beds along Horse Pen Creek this spring. In a storm, much of the runoff from Tybee's streets feeds into the creek, bringing with it pollutants such as pesticides and pet waste along with the oil and antifreeze that drips from vehicles.
Fabric filters in the city's catch basins remove 70 percent to 90 percent of the fine silty particles on which these pollutants hitch a ride, said Joe Wilson, Tybee director of public works.
Oysters will work overtime to finish the job.
"They filter water at a rate of 2.5 gallons per hour," said Daniel Harris, Georgia coordinator for the Shellfish Lab. "You can imagine a whole oyster reef is doing a lot of filtering."
For their trouble, the oysters will get a place to call home.
Along the East Coast, the once ubiquitous shellfish has been reduced to about 2 percent of its historic populations, Harris said. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Georgia had the largest oyster industry in the country.
That robust fishery crashed after harvesters failed to put spent shells back in the waterways, using them instead in chicken feed and tabby and leaving oysters with nothing to attach themselves to.
In March and April, Harris expects to use AmeriCorps volunteers to place 5,000 mesh bags filled with oyster shells along the creek's banks.
The spent shells provide a place for free-swimming oyster larvae, called spat, to take hold and grow.
Along with filtering, the oysters should also stabilize the creek banks.
"Everybody is getting something out of this," Wilson said.
Tybee is even looking at promoting the oyster shell bagging events and placement of the bags in the creek as ecotourism opportunities.
Tybee council member Paul Wolff said natural infrastructure trumps the artificial sort.
"It's always nice to help Mother Earth, or in this case Mother Ocean, take care of herself," he said.

The journey home...

I'm almost home, spending the night in Ocean Isle Beach, NC with my friend Lynda in her wonderful cottage on the Intra coastal Waterway- Seaboard House. Had fried oysters , coleslaw and hush puppies for lunch in Southport, NC, getting a good night's rest tonight and then home to Mermaid Manor tomorrow. The journey home continued to live up to the entire week's experience!

I left Donna's home at 6AM to drive my friend Sidney to National Airport ( I guess it's really called Regan Airport, but I grew up going to this airport with my family back in the 1960's to watch planes take off and land and it will always be National to me! Remember when it was a family treat to go to the airport and watch planes land???) Even though I just had to go a few blocks through Capital Hill, it was very cold and the sun hadn't risen and I got lost. I pulled over to three DC police cars and asked for some directions. Told them I had been here for the big week and one of the police said- "Just follow me- I'll give you a police escort to your friends!" So sure enough, just like all the big deal DC folks, I had my own police escort those 5 blocks ! No blue lights and sirens, but he escorted me right to the front door! His parting comments were he'd see me in 4 years and I represented my state of Georgia very well and I was a true Georgia Peach! How much fun was that!

On the way south driving down I95, there were 3 huge convoy's of Army trucks and equipment also heading South. I realized they had also been in DC for all the events and was truly shocked at the artillery they had brought with them. We can rest assured that the Army was fulled armed just in case anything were to have happened....

I also saw lots and lots of people heading south as well from their own DC visit- we all honked and waved to each other- I used my Obama big pointy fingers that of course I had to purchase on the mall!

Back home to Tybee on Thursday! And then time to start working on making our country the best she can be! Stay tuned for some ideas we have for Tybee.....

Yep, he waved to me!

I just couldn't leave. Despite the fact that I was shivering from being outside for so many hours in bone chilling cold, I just couldn't go inside. The energy and happiness and joy was just too intoxicating to leave! Plus the crowds were still just so immense that I was sorta sweep along with the masses.

I walked around the back part of the Capital and somehow found myself inside the area where once you exit, you can't re enter. As I kept walking, I found myself at the staging ground for the start of the parade. All the Capital Police, the Miltary Bands and the Honor guards were all by the Capital, waiting for the President to start the parade and then lead down to the official start of the parade a few blocks away.

We waited, not realizing that the parade was delayed because of Senator Kennedy collapse at the luncheon, but we kept waiting. And waiting. Then the sirens started, the motorcyles started up, and then the Military bands started up ( the President had already reviewed them). Then the press on huge flat bed trucks came next and then the Secret Service and the Presidential Motorcade started rolling by us very, very slowly.... and then we saw the family and they were waving to us and smiling to us and yes- happy to be there! We cheered him not just like a rock star, but as our new leader and our president and one we were so very, very proud of. The crowds kept following the motorcade down the street, cheering, shouting and crying. So much so, that poor Joe Biden 's motorcade didn't have a soul cheering him! I stopped following the motorcade and was completely by myself waving and cheering for Joe and Jill! I wasn't 100% sure that the President actually waved to me, but I am 1000% sure that Joe did wave to me because no one else was around!!!
I'm leaving the city tommorrow, time to go back home to my own community and try and find ways to help our community , state and country to be the best we can be.

Yes We Did- Our day of National Joy

Today was part Woodstock and part Religious Pilgrimage. A day so full of Hope that people from all over the world felt our happiness and wanted to share in the joy. We cheered our new president and said goodbye to the old one. I saw the former president's helicopter fly over the Mall on his way to Andrews Air Force Base. I can't begin to imagine what he thought when he saw the millions of people who came out to celebrate the newest chapter of our Country.

The day began riding the bus down the street as far as we could go towards the Mall. We first posed with the young soldiers here from Iowa helping with security all over the streets. Bundled up against the cold, layers and layers to try and keep warm. The Mall was going to be out of the question to watch the swearing in- the mall was already full at 5AM and we didn't leave the house until 8:30AM. I left Donna and Bud off at the Capital ( they had excellent seats towards the front) and I just kept walking and walking heading towards the Washington Monument. You literally were just swept along with the thousands and thousands of people, most of which did not have tickets, but were just there to hopefully hear , but mostly just to be there. I finally realized I wasn't going to get on the mall at all, so I stopped at 14th and Independence and walked up a staircase of one of the Smithsonian buildings. The mall was two blocks away and you could hear the Jumbotrons even if you couldn't see the events. My little group of strangers who were also on the steps became my little parade group family. Young and Old, Black and White, Americans and people from other countries. We all huddled together staying warm, sharing stories on why and how we were here, even being interviewed by two different people who were shooting documentaries of the day.

We couldn't hear very well, but we could see the mall and hear the cheers and knew what was happening and when. When the swearing in was finished, the cheers erupted all over. Our little group hugged and cried, some thanked God, some just smiled and looked towards the heavens. My new 78 year old friend from South Carolina who rode up with her church group arriving that morning at 8AM and was leaving at 6PM back on the same charter bus, thanked God and then told me again how we all need to do our part to help this man create change in our country.
After the swearing in, I started the walk back towards home walking past the various museums. I passed the Air and Space Museum and didn't see any lines getting in- so I just walked up the steps and walked in! Warmth! Bathrooms! Places to sit down ! Not to mention, I was in one of the best museums ever, one that celebrates the human spirit and all we can do when we put our minds to it! We walked on the Moon. We flew around the world, We made air travel as common and safe as bus travel. I wandered all over the museum and again thought of how wonderful to be in a country where any thing is possible with hard work and the opportunity. I finally warmed enough and was shocked- all those people on the mall had also tried to get inside, but had to face hundreds of people ahead of them also trying to get in. My leaving allowed one more person to come in.
What a Day! What a Country!

Our National Community

Last night I drove Bud and Donna to the Indiana Ball. I myself have a big date with my buddies at MSNBC- Chris and Keith to start things out! I did tell Bud, who's a very big deal in his home state of Indiana to tell John and Elaine Mellancamp I said hello and that he represented Tybee very well yesterday!

I had an experience heading back home that sums up the change in our country- at least for this week... Donna lives in the Capital Hill area which is still a neighborhood in transition. I got turned around driving back to the townhouse and saw a woman at a bus stop and pulled over and asked her for directions to Florida Ave. She gave me great directions and then told me welcome to DC. I realized how cold it must be waiting for a bus and I could tell she'd been working all day. I asked her if I could drop her off somewhere vs waiting for the bus. She paused for a second then said- Sure why not!

We started talking on the way to her home in Southeast DC . She had just finished working at her job with a catering company here in DC and she told me how she just kept tearing up during the party because she was just so proud of what was happening in the country. She said her parents never believed this would happen in their lifetime. Then she said, "and you know, I never would have gotten in a car with a complete stranger and I bet you never would have offer ed a black stranger in downtown DC a ride home either". We both started laughing and she hugged me when she got out of the car and said "God Bless America. We live in the greatest country in the world and we're living up to our potential." I was part of a feeling today that I experienced in downtown Atlanta during the 1996 Olympics where everyone thought the best of each other and truly felt like a global community. It's a high and is the reason why we all in DC are walking around like giddy kids!

Enough for now, I'm heading to the Mall to say "I was there" to anyone who asks where I was when History was made in our Country.

My new best friends-the crew at Morning Joe!

Ok we did it. And those of you who read my blog last night were up and watched Morning Joe at MSNBC starting at 6AM know we did it! I found 3 other friends who are much a political junkie as I am. What fun!! We were up and waiting for Pam and Sydney to pick us up at 6AM to get to the Dubliner by 6:15AM. After all, we figured how big a crowd could there be at that time. Surely no one else really watches the show to know their plans. WRONG. What I came to realize this morning is for so many of us, this is our SuperBowl. We're like middle aged men who can't wait for football season and the chance to go to the big game! All the other political junkies like us were in the line which stretched for about two blocks, it was very cold with light snow... and we were dressed for TV, not for the winter. So we waited and waited.... then Willie came out to work the line, he posed for pictures and was just like he is on TV- cute and good humored! We slowly moved up and finally made it to the tent area. We saw Willie go back into the Dubliner at a door right by us and Sydney decides to follow. 2 seconds later, she comes out and motions us all to come in. We're right in the area where they are shooting the show!

So, we wiggle into a spot directly behind Joe and stand there for 2 1/2 hours! I know alot of you saw Donna in the white coat- thank you Susan for telling me to move her to the side! We watched, we cheered with each new favorite who walked in and was on the show. We stood over two ladies from Atlanta who were eating breakfast ( and as they said, kept stretching it out for 2 hours so they didn't have to give up their seat.) We didn't get autographs, but we did get Morning Joe buttons and posters! We saw Tom Brokaw, David Gregory, Tina Brown, Mike Barnacle, Pat Buchannan, Wycliff Jean, the Governor of MA, Peggy Noonan ( who kept turned around and saying to the us- "isn't this festive!"), we even spotted Carole King the singer in the crowd- waved and said hello- then Mika and Joe spotted her and brought her on the show! So Carole can thank us for letting them know she was there. Mika asked her to come back tomorrow since she was staying right there at the connected hotel!

What was so great was everyone who was on the show recognized how special this time is for our country. This is not just another political event. This is transforming our country and even the world. They all had big grins on their face and kept signing autographs, posing for pictures and were in great humor! We did go over to David Gregory and tell him what a great job he was doing on Meet the Press. He genuinely thanked us and thanked us for taking the time to tell him so. He knows this is his show to take care of and love and accepts the responsibility with great respect.

Then when everything was over and done and the crowds left, we sat down and had a super Irish breakfast! On the way out, we ran into the executive producer and assistant producer of Morning Joe , told him what a great job they'd been doing and they then posed with us in front of the Dubliner! All of this and it wasn't even 10AM yet!

Yes, for those of you with eagle eyes, we were also on The Today Show when Meredith and Matt showed acouple of shots of Joe and Mika and we were yet again in the background.
We can't do the Tuesday show, but we sure are going to be up at 6AM to watch and see who's in our spot this time! Joe did tell the crowd to come on back on Tuesday, but we'll leave that to another group of hearty souls!

Hope, Connection, Unity

As one of my favorite people, Tim Russert always said, "What a Country". The Mall today was a giant block party, the country's largest state fair, the 4th of July parade that makes us all cry.... something is in the air... we're yearning for something that maybe we can't quite put our fingers on it, but we don't want it to go away. We and we're talking thousands of people- just wandered around smiling at each other, laughing just because we all feel so good, buying everything out there that says Obama or 1-20-2009 or something to help us remember today. The media was EVERYWHERE! I finally found my friends from Miami who are as giddy as the rest of us and as we're walking the Mall, two very cute, very young men with mics and a TV camera came up to us and asked if they could interview us! Turns out they were from Australia- one of the big news stations from Sydney and they wanted to know why we were here and what all this means to us. Then they were delighted to pose with us for pictures!

We also walked down to the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress- look how beautiful and majestic both these buildings are! 12 hours and counting till we head back to the mall and our day of history! Such a beautiful day to be outside with our fellow Americans!

This is why I came to DC

This is why I love America......I was part of over a Million people today celebrating our country. We all laughed and cried, we sang and danced , we made friends with the people around us, we all were bursting with pride to just be together and to be Americans. We waited outside in the cold for a couple of hours, then stayed outside another two hours to hear the best music in the world performed by artists who were as excited to be there as we were. Then when it was all over and a Million people were leaving at the same time, no one complained, no one pushed, we all just kept smiling and singing and moved out together.

This city is completely prepared for all the millions who've come to "their city" to celebrate. The Mall has over 27 jumbotrons set up to watch the festivities. So even though I was back by the Washington Monument, I was right by the one of the huge screens so we could not only hear the music and speeches, but see the huge screen. Great planning on behalf of the city!

We sang with Garth Brooks "Bye Bye Miss American Pie" and then we danced and sang to "Shout." A few groups later Bono and U2 sang "In the name of Love "and I don't know who had bigger smiles on their faces- them or all of us in the audience who sang along with them word for word. Literally, the ENTIRE MALL was singing and dancing!!!!

Today and this week is all about being part of something bigger then ourselves . We all want our country and ourselves to come thru all the trouble and problems we are facing ..... One man cannot change and fix all the problems we have in our country and world. Each of us have to step forward and do our part to help our country.

I wouldn't have missed today for the world and wish everyone could have been there with me! There was one other person from Tybee Island with me- John Mellancamp sang "Little Pink Houses" and represented Tybee well!

On the way back to Donna's home, I walked thru the mall and came across a place I thought only existed in fantasy land.... or on TV... but, there is was...... the inauguration home base for MSNBC!!!!! I plan to hang out there all day tomorrow, waiting for my favorites to appear! Keith! Andrea! Chris! Rachael!! Even those other people who's names I don't know but watch all day Monday- Friday! Tomorrow will be a big day, I actually am starting very early, we're heading to The Dubliner- a local irish pub here on Capital Hill where they'll be broadcasting my one of favorite show from MSNBC- Morning Joe!!!! Yep, we'll be there at 6AM when the show starts, so stay tune in from 6AM- 9AM!

PS- I returned back to Donna's via a pedi cab! Hey- I'm doing everything I can to experience the city and what a better way then in the back seat of a bicycle cab!!! I was so nice and warm, thank you Penny for loaning me that full down coat!

I'm heading to Washington, DC......

I'm so excited.... I'm on my journey North heading to DC ( stopping along the way to visit friends and family) to be part of this great Democratic Process of Peaceful Transfer of Power. I do not have tickets to any event, but plan to be at the Lincoln Memorial for the Sunday free concert ( Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Arthea.....) I'll hopefully be part of the National Service Day on Monday, but most of all I'll be one of the Millions of Americans standing in the cold @ 11AM on Tuesday when the new President is inaugurated. The parade starts 2PM and I also plan to be on the street cheering on all those marching bands ( maybe getting some ideas for our Marching Mermaid parade unit for the Tybee Parades!)

I drove up to Charlotte, NC last night staying with Penny. Incredible dinner at a little Viet Nam restaurant and getting all caught up. She just returned from two weeks in Egypt and spent time at one of my favorite museums in the world- the Egyptian museum in Cairo.... then I left Charlotte to drive further North to my parents for the night. The Interstates I was on- I77 and I81 were full of tour buses and cars heading to DC as well. Many of them had markings all over them, DC here we come, Our date with history 1-20-09, just lots of fun!

Katie and I went to the Clinton Inauguration 16 years ago and we adored the experience despite the bitter cold. She can't get off work ( that's what happens when you become an adult sometimes) but I'll be meeting other friends in the city and staying with my friend Donna who is kind enough to open her home to me.

I'll be updating everyone on the experience ( nightly if my fingers have thawed out enough from the cold!) Here is a link to see more of the details of what will be happening over the next few days.

Youtube and Mermaid Cottages

Ok all, this is the participation part of the blog. We need your feedback. We've posted three You tube video's of our cottages- A Mermaid's Tale, Under the Tybee Sun and then a video of one of our families walking from these two cottage past Nora's Cottage ( since they are all side by side on 2nd Ave) . I really love You tube as many of you know ( you can find a video on anything in the world you want it seems!) and my goal is to have video's of not only all the cottages, but have my guests, my homeowners and anyone who is inspired to post a video of their Mermaid Cottage experience on You tube.

Here's where I need your help.....
I'd like to ask you to click on the link here and watch the three video's and rate them. I'd also love your feedback- was the video clear and easy to see? What other cottages would you like to see next on You tube? Do you want us to talk about the cottage or just show the home like we did here? I value your thoughts and feedback and really look forward to any and all comments.

We have a Weekly Farmers Market!

Hip Hip Hooray!!!!!

Can you hear the whooping and hollering! Can you see the dancing in the street? Drum roll..... Savannah officially now has a weekly farmer's market with local produce, most ( if not all ) is organic and grown by small family farms in the area. Here is the info about the Market as well as the info on where you can sign up to be part of their email distribution list.

I went yesterday for the first time and was so happy! I just love farmer's markets and being part of a community event. This completely fit the bill, including an excuse to get to go into downtown historic Savannah. Even the location of this farmer's market is special.
I purchased organic brown eggs ( same price as what I usually pay at Publix) organic turnips, lettuce and peppers, plus some handmade lavender soap! Best of all was knowing that not only am I going to be eating local, organic food, but I'm also supporting my neighbors who farm. You don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling at Publix! Here is their newsletter....

Local farmers and craftsmen unite to provide Savannah with the freshest organic produce and great homemade crafts & goods.

In 1734, on a high bluff overlooking the Savannah River, James Oglethorpe planted a garden to nourish a young city in a new world.
In 2008, Charles Morris assumed the cultivation of Mr. Oglethorpe's garden to nourish a great city
for the whole world. The Market at Trustees'Garden is an effort to revitalize this rich legacy of Savannah. It is an attempt to reinvigorate the first experimental garden of the Unites States of America.

As we reach frosts of the season and tender fruits and vegetables go into hibernation until spring, many greens, like kale hit their peak. During the warm summer months, greens are sitting ducks for their many predators, including rodents, insects, and birds. As a protection mechanism, greens emit a bitter taste to discourage nibblers. When the weather cools down, there are far fewer of these threats to contend with, and so winter greens reduce the production of these bitter chemicals and get sweeter and sweeter. Kale, a member of the cabbage family, is the most robust of winter greens; some plant biologists consider its hardiness unmatched by any other vegetable. Kale also tolerates a huge variety of soils and temperatures. While young leaves can be enjoyed raw in salads and slaws, more mature specimens benefit from cooking before being eaten.Until the middle ages, kale was the most prolific edible crop in Europe, and it obviously has endured, as seeds have migrated from continent to continent. Kales, like other dark, leafy greens, are steeped in vitamins A, B, C and K, beta carotene and even calcium, as well as sulphoraphane, a chemical believed to be an effective anti-carcinogenic. Consider cozying up to kale this winter!

A Breakfast Club Tradition... A shot of crown

We have two wonderful guests staying at Surf Puppy Cottage this week who came to Tybee to get married. They love "shabby chic" and purposely wanted to stay at Surf Puppy because the pictures looked exacatly like what they wanted in their dream cottage! Our friends at Tybee Island Wedding www.tybeeislandwedding.com married them on the beach on Saturday ( Stephen Palmer is an acutal minister besides being a wedding planner) , they had their wedding dinner at The Sundae Cafe, one of our best restaurants on the island. Best of all, the groom went to have breakfast by himself Saturday morning and sat at the counter ( the best seat in the house.) Ordered a big breakfast, ate and happening to mention to the locals at the counter he was getting married that afternoon. From out of no where came a big bottle of adult beverages and they sat him back down and poured him a shot. A Breakfast Club wedding tradition they told him!

Day was perfect, in the 70's ( yes in January) and they're off on their happy life together! Thank you for allowing us to share in your wedding celebration!

A Tybee Saturday night, Champagne , Mink and Teva's

We started the New Year off great with our now annual Mermaid Cottages January Celebration. ( we decided after last night this needs to be annual AND in January!) We included everyone who works with Mermaid Cottages, helps with Mermaid Cottages , stays at Mermaid Cottages , members of our Mermaid Cottages Facebook group and just other dear Tybee people and friends! Dutton Waller was the host cottage and people showed up! In droves! We had guests ranging from in age from the 80's ( Mrs. Williams, Curly and Dee) to the single digits ( Nevon and Fallon.) The weather was perfect, cool, but not too cold, full moon and white lights all over the wrap around screened porch and as requested- positive attitudes only. No grouches! I decided that despite all the bad economic news, we're going to treat our world as one full of abundance and we have what we need to not only survive, but to be very happy! And we were happy Saturday night!

The food served was munchies- there will be a completely separate blog on the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding.... lots of good stuff including Back in the Day cupcakes, Mary Lou's Gooey Butter Cake, Castaway Coconut Cake and Tiara Miso courtesy of Fio and Michael who are staying at Flip Flop Cottage. Champagne, beer and wine added to our cheerful attitudes!

I asked people to wear sparkles and many complied. Our favorite was the home owner of Fiddler on the Creek. Katie wore her mom's 1950's sparkly jacket with mink cuffs. Katie is a huge animal person but we all agreed your mom's vintage jacket was ok to wear . She topped off her stunning jacket in true Tybee Style.... Teva Sandals.

Lots and lots of fun, so much so the party that ended at 11Pm didn't end until after midnight. I literally was going around turning off the lights saying goodnight. Nevon and Fallon, our single digit aged guests actually found a bed to crawl in and fall asleep. Smart girls!

Now we're on to planning our very first Mermaid Cottages parade entry .... stay tuned!

These pictures are courtesy of Sherri Simmons who takes pictures for Savannah Now. You can see all the party pictures by going to http://www.spotted.savannahnow.com/ Thank you Sherri!
Lastly, here is an excerpt from an email my very talented artist friend, Pam Martin sent describing the party that I'd like to share:
"I have to tell you that what I will remember most, is as I was leaving for the evening I looked back up at the home and actually paused in the driveway - the home was warmly uplighted, and the incredibly fat full moon was gazing at herself on the river, and you could hear the wonderful conversations and laughter carried on the Atlantic breeze. I actually thought to myself that the original owners of this home must have been very satisfied this night to know that their home was once again so loved by someone special like you and that happiness and life was flowing back into it. What a wonderful gift, indeed!"
Thank you Pam, I agree, Blanche Waller is smiling knowing that her beach house is full of happiness and love still!

Southern Living Jan 2009- The Slip Cover article has arrived!

The long awaited issue of Southern Living has come out with the stories of my slipcovers in my home, Mermaid Manor. Charles Walton, the senior photographer and Julia Hamilton, Senior writer ( who also just retired after 20 years with the magazine- Congrats Julia!) did a great job. I've had friends from all over the South call me in shock to see my home (And Max and I!) in the magazine! One friend called me to say she was sitting in her doctors office and was reading the article and said to her daughter- this looks just like my friend Diane's home. Of course her daughter said can't be... but then Cristy says- OMG- it is Diane!!! The whole doctor's office looked up and then read the article together!

Another one of my dear friends told me how in her town of Columbus, GA , to have your home in Southern Livving is about a big a deal as you can be!

I'm very honored with the story, thrilled that my home looks so beautiful ( and still does on most days!) and even better, when you go to http://www.southernliving.com/ under sources, you can see http://www.mermaidcottages.com/ The above picture was taken by Charles and included in the article. The main picture of the article shows my living room and if you look carefully in the book shelves, you'll see the books of our favorite southern writer, Mary Kay Andrews !

Kendrah White is the slipcover genius and you can go to her blog to learn more about her amazing work.... Thank you Kendrah for including me in this great adventure! http://www.savvysewing.blogspot.com/ And of course thank you to Jane Coslick for being the creative genius behind taking my vision and all my "stuff" and turning this into a dream nest.

We're posting the entire article on mermaidcottages.com under the Media Section of the website so you can read at your leisure.

Keep your fingers crossed, I've heard from my Southern Living friends that they'll be using other pictures from the photo shoot in future magazines....

The Shrimp is honored by Coastal Living and..... in gingerbread!

It's been a big month for our little cottage, The Shrimp! Not only is she mentioned in the Jan 2009 Coastal Living Magazine http://www.coastalliving.com/ in the Guest Book Section ( huge honor!) but just as important- if not bigger news, one of our visitors created her version of the cottage as a gingerbread cottage! How much fun is this! We adore Coastal Living and this issue is very special- the story itself is about one of Jane Coslick's cottages http://www.janecoslick.com/ and since the Shrimp is one of Jane's masterpieces, they also mentioned this as a great cottage to stay. Then we have the story of the Gingerbread House.

Here in Janelle's own words is what happened...

"A friend and I were on a short, 2-day vacation on Tybee Island last September when we noticed your Shrimp cottage. My friend and I loved how cute it was. We hadn't been to Tybee before and on a rainy afternoon, drove around the island - thats when we found it and thought it amazing (later I saw the inside on your website and love it even more!). When we returned back home, I looked it up online and found your website and bookmarked it. Now - you're probably wondering why I'm telling you about this....lol! Our community has a Gingerbread Festival held in December. After viewing some amazingly decorated gingerbread houses, I decided to make one myself. Only...I didn't want to just do a house...I wanted to do a beach house! I remembered the Shrimp Cottage from our vacation and that was my inspiration. These are a few pictures of my version of the Shrimp Cottage. I know I didn't nearly do it justic, but I had a lot of fun re-creating the cottage...however, I took a little liberty and placed it oceanfront and put a deck around it. "
Thank you Janelle from Michigan for being so creative! We look forward to pictures of your 2009 gingerbread creation and the cottage you select to recreate!

And don't forget Inlet Breeze as well in Coastal Living Jan 2009

Another publication surprise! Coastal Living Magazine- which we love! -also featured another one of our cottages in "Guest Book" where they feature vacation rentals that are exceptional. This has been one of my dreams to have Mermaid Cottage featured in Guest Book.... we're getting there and maybe someday we'll have one of our cottages submitted by one of our guests as their best vacation rentals ever and Coastal Living will select us!! However, until then, we're happy to be a part of the article mentioning other homes besides the featured property. Besides the Shrimp being mentioned, Inlet Breeze was also mentioned. This 1930's old boarding house turned vacation rental is located in"downtown" Tybee and just two blocks to the beach. Tall ceilings with equally tall windows, bright and cheerful cottage style furniture, lots of local art ( the Owners are part of SeaSide Sisters Coastal Cottage Shop) and don't forget they have....... a karaoke machine!!!!!! You can not only go to Mermaid Cottages to see the cottage, but also their own website www.inletbreezecottage.com Thank you Coastal Living!

Road Side Food- Fried Chicken Livers!

As I continue to travel up and down the highways on my road trips during the slow season, I seek out unique places to stop and eat. Nothing againist the chain restaurants, but if I'm going to eat something that's not really that good for me, I'm gone to buy local. BBQ is something I love to discover and all throughout the Carolina's I find a place to eat. Maurice's BBQ is my favorite because I love that mustard sauce!

Smithville, VA is not only the home of the Ava Gardner museum but the home of The Chicken Barn and fried chicken. AND................ fried chicken livers..... My sister and I first found this place when we were heading south on I95 and needed a road break, we couldn't resist the Ava museum but were overwhelmed by the smell from across the street of fried grease. We went inside and as the lady behind the counter said, our chicken is good, but you gotta try the chix livers! Now, every time I'm on 95 , I pull over. They flash fry them to order and serve them juicy and hot. Good thing I'm only in the area a few times a year!!!

Sometimes you just can't make this up. You gotta love Roland Burris.

I usually reserve try and blog about my adventures and life on Tybee. Sometimes things are so funny, un believable or just worth noting that don't happen on our island that I have to comment! Even though this is not the Huffington Post or the O'Reilly Factor, I am a political junkie and since this is my blog, am allowed to observe! The drama behind the replacement of the Junior Senator's Seat from Illinois is just too much fun to watch.

Doesn't matter where you sit on this story, the man who has been appointed by the "Governor" of Illinois is an American we all can't help but to love. Here is what happened today as it was reported by every major news organization in the country.

  • He left for DC today and held a press conference before he left. Couldn't help it, there were hundreds of press following he and his wife. His wife , Berlean who was dressed to the nine's including a great "go to church hat."

  • Announced at the press conference that "I am the Junior Senator from Illinois and I will be reporting for work on Tuesday."

  • Best of all, he took Southwest Airlines from Chicago to Baltimore! Cattle call and all, he paid for his ticket for he and his wife and off he flew!

You go Roland Burris! You are 71 years old and we'll continue to watch and see what happens when you report to work on Tuesday like you have for years, ready to work hard and serve your country!

Holiday Newsletters and good wishes, updates and kids growing up!.

I may be the only person in the world that really and truly loves receiving those holiday newsletters from friends and family. Since I just arrived home last night, I had a reading Marathon of cards and notes. Loved it!
I've lived so many places and have such a varied group of friends- many of which are so kind to keep me on their Holiday Card lists - I truly enjoy watching kids grow up yearly thru their Christmas Card. I always say to myself I need to send cards out next year, but never quite get to it... and now with my blog , my excuse is I can keep people updated daily on Tybee Life and adventures!

Besides receiving all the newsletters , I love to see the creativity of the cards sent. So many cards this years are focusing on the hope of change in our country. We all want to prosper and the focus on working together and moving forward was inspiring.

One of my favorite messages of good will was from my friend Cindy Lou who lives in Los Angeles. I asked if I could share and here it is. Very simple, but what great wishes for 2009!

epicurean fantasies

Yep, I"m back on Tybee

Two wonderful weeks of holidays, I really had a wonderful time with my family and friends! Made the long drive home, first dropping Katie off in Asheville , then finally arriving home today!

Driving through Savannah with those beautiful live oak trees, then down the Tybee road across all the marsh .... so good to be home! My back home routine always includes checking everything outs, so I drove the island, checking on the cottages and making sure everyone was fine . All is good! I was driving down S. Campbell Ave looking at Fiddler on the Creek and saw a true Tybee sight which made me not only smile, but realize, yep I'm no longer in Delaware!

Walking down the street pushing a baby stroller was a very normal looking lady. Hair was a little black as in Elvis dyed black ( the old Las Vegas Elvis, not the young slim Elvis), but hey, not a biggie. The dogs started barking like crazy and I realized that she was pushing her perisan cat in the cat cage, not a baby.... The cage was necessary because the cat may just not like being pushed down the street so that poor cat needed to be caged because gosh darn it, that cat was going for a walk rather she liked it or not! Tybee, it's good to be home!

A trip back to 1962 and the wonders of Ocean City, Maryland

My parents were school teachers and big vacations were not even a possibility. But every June as soon as school was out, we drove to Ocean City , Maryland and rented the upstairs apartment on 56th Street for the enormous sum of $62.00 a week. My parents saved all year long for this much needed holiday and we did this for 15 years... We cooked in every meal except for the big night out at Phillips Crab House. We were 4 houses back from the beach and spent every day at the beach hours at a time. Another big night was to go to the Ocean City Boardwalk and enjoy Thrasher's French Fries and Fisher's Carmel Popcorn. And then, we scared ourselves to death by taking our annual ride on the Haunted House Coffins! This week we drove to Ocean City and saw all the old familiar sites and with the exception of our actual vacation rental, everything else was just as it was 40 years ago! Fishers and Thrashers tasted as good today as they did all those years ago. Vinegar on the fries and carmel corn to wash it down. The Haunted House is closed for the season, but just as scary as ever!
We also took a trip to St. Michael's , Maryland, a place so charming with cottages, shops and sheer beauty, I could have taken pictures all day. The famous restaurant is the Crab Claw with views of the harbor and seafood fresh from the bay. While taking pictures of these cottages, a very nice man stopped us when he saw our license plates. Turns out his son attends SCAD and he knows and loves Tybee! No matter where we go, we find people who know our island!
I'm so glad to have visited this sites, I'd forgotten how vacation rentals has been part of my life from such a young age! Jackie- thought you'd really enjoy these pictures!

Five Hundred thousand twenty five thousand six hundred minutes

There are 525,600 minutes in a year. This is from the song, Seasons of Love from the Broadway Musical Rent. When I was in Miami in December and attended Unity on the Bay Church, a church member who happens to be a world class singer sang this song during the service's musical offerings ... I adore this song and am always affected by the words and the beauty of the music and so on this beautiful New Year's Day, lead me to think how I spent the minutes of 2008.................
  • My beloved Mermaid Cottages... I've gotten over the fact that it's "wrong" to love my work so much. Mermaid Cottages is my bliss and my passionate and one of the reasons why I'm here on this earth. There is not separation of work and my life, it all blends together and that's just fine with me.. I come in contact daily with extraordinary people, either my own team of mermaids and mermen, my home owners who allow me to treat their homes like they are my own and my guests . My guests allow us to do everything possible to help them create memories they'll never forget. And isn't that what a beach trip should be- to create memories?
  • The picture shot with my family. Yes we had a mother/ daughter fight getting ready, yes, it was un godly hot ( August .......) but when it was all said and done and we saw the pictures, even Katie said we should do this once a year to help chronicle our life as a family. Thank you Christine Hall Photography for making this happen for me!
  • Walking my dogs... I know they are just dogs. I know they are not little humans with fur coats. But I sure do cherish my time with them. If it weren't for them, I would certainly not be walking them in all types of weather, freezing cold or oppressive heat, but I also would miss seeing so much of the outside world. Walk and sniff is our way of walking..
  • Reuniting with so many friends from my younger days. I was lucky enough to re connect with college best friends- Cristy, Tracy, Rhonda during my University of Maryland Homecoming Pom Pom event and also being able to spend more time with my bestest friend Penny this summer. Even though her Tybee romance didn't quite work out ( what's wrong with some men anyway!) it allowed us time together we haven't had in a few years.
  • Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Ning... I spend so many minutes on all of these connecting with the world. Why do so many of us love Facebook so much? I've really pondered this and it's because we create our own communities with friends and family all over the world. Very few of us have the luxury of having everyone we care about most in the world living in the same village. But thru the true miracle of all these sites, you keep in touch with them. Those little details of life keep us all connected.
  • Road trips with my mom and sister and spend large chunks of time together. Yes, we get on each other's nerves, but what a treat to be able to create our own memories with each other that we'll always have. Donny and Marie...... need I say more!
  • Creating my Nest through the magic of Jane Coslick. Jane continues to spend many minutes of her year helping us create the look and feel of various Mermaid Cottages. This year, she helped create my "big girl " nest- Mermaid Manor. To be selected for the article in Southern Living, featured on the Tybee Tour of Homes and to have a photo shoot for an upcoming book, none of this would have happened without Jane's true creative energy, soul and passion. My nest is perfection to me and a place I love to fly home to.
  • Three of my uncles died this year. Uncle Kenny, Uncle Jay and Uncle Lynn. All died in their 80's and 90's and each had a life very well lived. I actually saw all three of them this year and spent time with them. Knowing you're part of a "tribe" of such exceptional people helps you know not only where you come from, but where you're going.
  • Learning the lesson of change , patience and letting go.... I thought I really embraced change , but through some painful lessons in 2008, have finally understood that things do change and we can't control or stop any of it. We just have to have the faith and trust that truly there are greater things out there waiting for us. As Oprah has said over and over again, God has bigger dreams for us then we could ever dream for ourselves. I spent many minutes this year trying to learn how to let go of expectations and allow life to just flow...

I could go on and on about my minutes, but that's the beauty of this being My Blog! I can always add more blogs when the spirit ( or minutes) moves me!

My beloved YouTube , the magic place where you can find any music or video you could ever imagine has dozens of "Season's of Love" available. This is one of my favorites because it's sung by the 2008 Cast of American Idol ( of which I am a huge fan and a winter highlight... the new season kicks off in a few weeks!) Even if you aren't an Idol Fan, please treat yourself to a few minutes of special music and play this.. And thank you Jeff Wahl for being one of my dearest friends and always going to "our" Miami church with me...
