The Crab Cab- only on Tybee Island

There have been moments of sheer joy on Tybee Island this summer. You're walking down the street or driving down Butler Ave and all of a sudden you see it- something so unique and crazy fun that you literraly exclaim ( even if you're by yourself) "It's the Crab Cab"! The Crab Cab started out like a normal taxi service on Tybee. Then Joe the new owner took it over and even added to the number- there is now a "fleet" of Crab Cabs and they all live just down the street from me! The normal looking cabs have turned into something more. They are a mirage of kookiness in an already crazy kooky island town. The Crab Cabs have a very large crab trap attached to the top with plastic crabs inside and outside the trap. There are stickers of various Tybee businesses all over the back and side. There is even talk of Karoke coming soon from inside the cab. I just love this Crab Cab so much I need to keep sharing!

Scenes fron a Tybee microwave

How do you not love this crazy little island. This is a picture of the microwave at the local Chu's convenience store. The sign on the microwave says "Do not defrost bait in microwave." Not a sign you'll see many places!

Fish Camp in her summer glory!

The garden at Fish Camp Cottage is in full summer bloom. She sits directly across the street from the Last Song Church and has been ignored this summer, but she knows how beautiful she is! The blues of the garden flowers are match the shutters of the cottage. Enjoy!

The Last Song Church

This church just fascinates me! The church has been built on an empty lot in front of Fish Camp Cottage from scratch. Then the church was partially burnt and painted to look burnt. Now the church as been re built and looks pristine and perfect. Scenes for the movie will be shot there in another few weeks with the church looking just this way. Then who knows what will happen to the church! Stay tuned to see what happens with "the Tybee Island Baptist Church!"

Paula Deen has a new fan....Danny does it again.

Danny the cupcake eating dog has a new passion. Paula Deen's Cheese Biscuit Mix. SeaSide Sisters now carries a wide variety of Paula's sauces , spices and mixes and I had here at the cottage several boxes of the biscuit mix. I know my dog and my dog smells anything that remotely might be something to eat and he's on the counter and he's chowing down on what ever that may be and he can reach. Readers of my blog know he's eaten cup cakes, sour cream peach pound cake, entire bags of confectioner sugar... the list goes on. But I NEVER thought he would reach far enough on the counter, take a box of biscuit mix and EAT the entire box!

I came back home from a dinner with friends and found the tell tale signs of Danny eating something he shouldn't have. There was a trail of powder all over throughout the house but I couldn't figure out what he could have possibly have eaten. Everything was put away. Then I smelled his face. Cheesy smell... Hmmm..... I looked in the office area and where there used to be three boxes of cheese biscuit mix, there were now two. So I took another box and sure enough, Danny went crazy over the smell and started to eat the next box!

He certainly has good taste! The rest of us can also enjoy these cheese biscuits by buying a box at SeaSide Sisters!

Top Ten Healthiest Beaches in the USA!

Tybee Island has been named one of the top 10 Healthiest Beaches in the Country by Health Magazine! This is based on how clean the beaches is, the water quality, the number of healthy activies available and even the places to eat that offer healthy food!

NBC's The Today Show just ran a story on the beaches and annouced on Friday's show that Tybee Island, GA is the Number 1 most healthy beach in the country!! Yeah!!! Here is the link to watch the clip from the show:
Here's how they picked the locations in their own words:

"We started with a list of the 50 most popular beach and lake towns in the country (as defined by the total number of vacation days tourists spend there) from the American Automobile Association. To arrive at our top-10 list, our judges rated places in five categories: quality and cleanliness of air, water, and, sand; range of fitness opportunities; healthfulness of local restaurants; safety measures, including the presence of lifeguards, how close the town is to a major trauma center should an emergency come up, and the crime rate; and affordability of accommodations (based on the average rates in July, provided by Smith Travel Research)."
Here's the entire article to read !

Thank you Health Magazine and The Today Show for helping spread the word about what a great place Tybee is to visit and live.

Lights out for Sea Turtles this summer

Don't forget to all our visitors on the island- from 9PM until Dawn, please be sure to turn off any lights that shine on the beach or Back River areas. We also need to be sure that if any of your indoor lights shine thru the windows overlooking beach areas, you pull down your shades. Our nesting Sea Turtles need quiet dark beaches to nest and lay their eggs this summer and with the beaches being so full and crowded this summer, we need to give them all the help we can.

Artificial light discourages females from nesting and baby sea turtles who have just hatched ( hatchlings) will instinctively move toward the brightest light- which should be moon light and the ocean UNLESS the homes along the beach are lit up.

So... from May 1st till October 31st - our nesting season- help out these amazing creatures.

These are two light switch plates we carry at Sea Side Sisters - hand crafted by one of our favorite local artists- Pam Martin. Pam makes all types including shrimp, crabs, mermaids and even black labs. These two are all we have in the shop right now, but we can always order more if anyone is interested!

Our new favorite person- the production designer for "The Last Song"

A person has come into our lives on Tybee that we never knew we needed. But he's here and he's making a huge difference on our island. The production designer for "our" movie " The Last Song". These are pictures of Nelson in front of the burned out church as well as downtown Tybee and the pier. Here's a great article which tells of Nelson's talents and the work he's done here.
"On Tybee Island near Savannah, Ga., former Abilenian Nelson Coates is causing quite a scene.
He spruced up a public pier, set up a carnival on the beach and constructed a wood-framed church painted white. What catches the attention of Savannah locals, however, is a teenager associated with the work: Miley Cyrus of “Hannah Montana” fame.
Coates is production designer for “The Last Song,” a film written by Nicholas Sparks (“The Notebook”) where Cyrus plays an angry and alienated teen. The movie also stars Kelly Preston (“Sky High”) and Greg Kinnear (“Little Miss Sunshine”) as Cyrus’ divorced parents and up-and-coming Australian Liam Hemsworth as a love interest. Sparks’ book is due in September.
For 11 weeks prior to the start of filming in mid-June, Coates did prep work in Savannah. Shooting on the Walt Disney Pictures project is to wrap up in August for an early 2010 release.
“The Last Song” is the latest in a long list of Coates’ major films and TV shows. Other recent projects include the movies “The Proposal” and “The Express” and several episodes of the 2007 TV show “October Road.”
“I have kept myself from being type-cast. I’ve been fortunate to do period movies, dramas, actions, comedies, futuristics,” Coates said.
A production designer makes a script come alive visually. Location, scenery, room décor, clothing, hair and makeup, stunts, color pallet and any other visualizations of a story are the responsibility of the production designer.
Coates reports directly to a movie’s producer and director and oversees a crew of about 125 on an average production.

“I’m known for a high level of detail and at a high level of completion. My sets don’t feel like a set,” Coates said.
Coates usually tackles two films a year, or less if he is hired for a television show. He has worked across the country and in Canada, Bulgaria, Australia, Mexico and England.
“I always tell people my things live in LA (Los Angeles),” Coates said.

Another pivotal project was the 1994 television mini-series “The Stand” by Stephen King. The nine-month project included 220 sets in 110 shooting days in five states representing 25 states in the series. Coates’ work garnered him an Emmy nomination.
“The blessing of my career path is that I had small, complex problems and did well on then. Then you get bigger and bigger and bigger ones,” Coates said.
Movies are not the result of magic, but “possibility thinking,” he said.
For example, the current box office hit “The Proposal,” starring Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson and Betty White, is set in New York City and Alaska, but filming occurred in and around Boston. Coates constructed a set inside a coastal house, giving it an “Architectural Alaska” magazine look, “if there was such a publication,” Coates said.
He then returned the house to its former interior after filming.
Six months after shooting wrapped, Coates said a new ending had to be filmed, but the Boston office building was unavailable. He instead meticulously recreated the set on a California soundstage.
“Either I had to figure it out or the next guy will,” Coates said.
He describes himself as a junior high principal and cheerleader encouraging others to do their best."
Nelson we are so glad you are here on Tybee working your magic!

Rhonda and Penny come to town

Two of my best friends from college came to town to visit back in May. I reconnected with Rhonda from our Pom Pom reunion last fall at Maryland and she wanted to come visit Tybee for our 1st annual wine festival! Penny only lives a few hours away so she drove down and joined us. We had a great long weekend- The Wine Festival, out with Captain Elizabeth and Tybee Island Charters exploring the waters around Tybee and eating some great meals! Check out the details on Capt. Elizabeth on her website http://www.tybeeislandcharters.com/ and learn more about the restoration of the Tybee Post Theatre ( the wine festival was a fund raiser for the theatre) on http://www.tybeeposttheatre.org/ Rhonda who lives in Washington DC couldn't believe all the very fun things there is to do on sucha small island!

I'm the Bubba Gump of Tomatoes

I love fresh tomatoes and this is tomato season. We can buy them at Davis Produce on the way to Tybee - they bill themselves as Home of the Killer Tomatoes ( not sure why that name..) or once on the island, you can buy them at Mama B's Produce Stand which is staffed by the cutest young man imaginable. No matter where I buy them, they are fresh and full of sunshine and just delicious. Penny ( my college roommate and dear friend of 3 plus decades...yikes!) was here visiting for the 4th and we made tomato everything. Tomato Pie with blue cheese and vidilia onions, Gazpacho soup and fried green tomatoes! Nothing could be better. In fact my tomato pie is so good, I've actually been making another one as soon as I finish the current one. There is a tomato pie in my refrig as we speak waiting for dinner tomorrow! You can find recipes for all these summer treats on http://www.southernliving.com/

Tybee Island Baptist Church

There is magic and wizards at work on Tybee this summer. A quiet little corner of the island- 13th and 6th Avenue ( right beside Fish Camp Cottage) has become the place to watch on a daily basis. The "Tybee Island Baptist Church" has been created from scratch. The church was built and then the true genius began. The church was painted and then partially burned to for part of the scenes to show the burnt church. Those scenes were shot last week and now the church has already been re built to shot some of the scenes that show the church being rebuilt.

The details on this church are extraordinary- I don't know if you can see of not, but the church front has the location address as 13th and 6th Avenue to show the exact location. I can't wait to see what happens next with the church transformation!

The movie adventure continues- last Friday on Tybeewood

Last Friday was quite the day. Even though I'm still so busy, I was able to leave the island despite wanting to hang around and watch Kelly Preston and Miley drive back and forth in front of my cottage, but toilet paper and paper towel shopping was calling me. Yes, as Head Mermaid, it is indeed part of my job description to head off to Sam's and purchase those needed supplies. I did stop off at the local YMCA and swim for a bit- I'm loving just being in the water swimming laps back and forth. Purchased all those important cottage supplies and once back on the island, found police cars yet again . The first of the big church scenes was being shot! Yeah!!!! Susan K was at my house dropping some things off and and we jumped on two of my old beach bikes and rode to Fish Camp Cottage which is directly across the street from the church. The rains have stopped and the weather is just incredible. No humidity , a strong breeze, warmth and early evening lights- the weather gods are smiling down on the Disney people.

We had such fun! The streets were closed off but because of managing the cottage, the police let us thru and we were able to go right to Fish Camp. The cameras were all set up on 6th Avenue , the entire crew was there, Kelly and Miley kept driving up and down in front of the cottage shooting the same scene over and over again. It was like a circus! They finished their scenes and then the real excitement began! The first of several fire scenes. The church has been made up to look like it's just been thru the fire, the fire guys were there to create the movie smoke and fire, even two of our local volunteer fire people were there- Todd and April! In full gear and part of the movie! Then..... Greg Kinnear!!! This was one of his scenes and full of drama. BTW- we heard the best story this week- Greg rides his bike to work every day down to the cottage where the scenes are being shot. Then when his day is finished, he's at our local Tybee Y working out. Just like any other Tybee local. The scene was very exciting and I also had a chance to meet the head make up man his family stayed with us just before 4th of July! He is quite the talent and Greg looked like he had been thru a terrible fire. And the best part- this is just the first of several shoots right in front of Fish Camp! More Hollywood on Tybee to blogging to follow!
