We never get tired of hearing from our guests about their stays! At Mermaid Cottages, we strive to make every single stay the best ever, so when we hear about one such stay, we can’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy! This is from a guest who had a stay atMary Kay Andrews’ very own Breeze Inn Cottage just last month:

“Ever since I saw Mary Kay’s home in Better Homes & Gardens, I knew that I had to plan a family getaway to Tybee Island. We chose the middle of April – and ended up having beautiful, warm weather.
This house has all of the amenities that you would expect in a high-end vacation home, along with a unique blend of kitschy vintage finds and well-loved antique furniture. Mary Kay’s vintage style was the main reason that I chose this home, so I appreciated the thoughtful details, like the glass doorknobs, seaside artwork and enormous farmhouse sink.
We had six people on our trip: myself and my husband, our two kids (six and eight) and my in-laws. We loved being able to walk to the beach in a just a few minutes, and drive to Savannah in about 20 minutes. We relaxed on the screened porch each evening, and slept comfortably in the breezy window-filled bedrooms upstairs. The bookshelves filled with movies and books were a great touch (especially all of the fabulous decorating books).

Live Like a Local: Tybee's Community Garden

Here on Tybee, we are always on the lookout for ways to conserve, preserve, and promote environmental awareness. One such project that includes all of those things is the Tybee Community Garden!

This season is off and running! The garden is meant to be a place where the entire community can experience the benefits of growing, gardening, and taking care of our local environment.The first work day this year was March 13th, but you can still get in on the fun! The garden produces year-round and is completely self sustaining. Participants of the project collect rain water and condensation from around the island to water...no city resources are used! There's even a composting area that uses nature to provide nutrients for all the growing plants.

Plots are available on a first come first served basis, and it is $50 for a 4x8 foot growing space. For information on available plots, and anything else you might need, contact Karen Kelly at 912-786-9719 or email karenontybee@aol.com.

Currently, the garden is for individual consumption and swapping, but hopefully we will see it blossom into a local market with fresh produce for sale! New members are welcome, as long as there are vacant plots available, so make sure to call for information! The garden can always use more supplies, like hoses, rain barrels, and such, so there are plenty of ways to lend a hand!

Last year was so much fun! Just look at some of the plots we had, and the harvest we enjoyed!

Mermaid Tales: Sea Turtle Friendly Cottages

It's sea turtle season on Tybee Island, and that means we are more conscious than ever about how our environment affects these amazing and beautiful creatures! It is so very important, especially for cottages right on the beach, to be aware of light pollution. Light pollution- from both indoor and outdoor sources -can have a negative impact on any nocturnal wildlife, especially our beloved sea turtles. Brightly lit areas discourage females from nesting as well as disorient new hatchlings, drawing them away from the ocean and toward dangers-a-plenty. If you are visiting Tybee during sea turtle season from May 1st thru Oct 31st, the most important thing to remember is that it is Lights Out for Sea Turtles time!

Mermaid Cottages cares immensely about this cause and we do everything we can to insure our beach front cottages- Doyle's on the Beach and Crabby Jo's -are super sea turtle friendly! We even support the Tybee Sea Turtle Project through sales of our very own Mermaid Morning Bliss Coffee! You know, these precious marine treasures face enough natural dangers as it is, so we need to do everything possible to get them their best chance at a long, healthy life!

Having alternative, sea turtle friendly lighting is a great way to have lights where you need them and still be sea turtle friendly, but it's just a good habit to close shades after dark, remove all obstacles from the beach, and turn off lights in rooms that aren't in use. And hey, those good green habits no matter where you are!

The Making of a Mermaid...Cottage

: Our beloved Breeze Inn

Before we bought our own Tybee Island beach house in 2008, I conducted my own unintentional research on beach rentals over the space of nearly many, many years. Growing up in St. Pete, Florida, my family rented beach cottages at places like Indian Rocks Beach and Madeira Beach, for many years. Those were basic little mom-and-pop tourist courts, where all seven of us would crowd into a two-bedroom cottage for two glorious weeks at the beach. Then, beginning in the years when my husband and I were parents with young’uns, we returned to the Gulf beaches with our own children. Those cottages were modest—with butt-sprung old mattresses, formica dinettes, and a motley collection of sofas and chairs, worn linoleum floors and the ever-present scent of suntan oil and mildew.

In later years, when we’d retreat to Grayton Beach, Florida, renting beach houses with friends for our children’s spring breaks, we found grander places—three story homes with elaborate kitchens, decks, ocean views, heated swimming pools—and grander prices too.
We lived in Raleigh, N.C. for a few years not long ago, and explored the Atlantic Coast beaches, renting tiny motel-room like efficiencies at Topsail Island and Sunset Beach.
All along the way, I was hatching a scheme to someday own my own beach cottage. Our search narrowed in recent years to Tybee Island. It was only a four-hour drive from our fulltime home in Atlanta, and we loved Tybee’s small-town funky, spunky charm.
But when I met Diane Kaufman, who owns Mermaid Cottage Vacation Rentals, my search went into hyperdrive. Diane invited me to stay in several of her cottages for those “runaway weeks” when I’d retreat to Tybee to work on a novel-in-progress. I think the first one I stayed in was either Flip-Flop, or The Shrimp.

Those cottages were an entirely new experience for me. They were small, yes, but oh, so cozy. And adorable. Did I mention they were adorable? Decorated in bright, beachy colors, they spelled instant vacation. They were comfortable too, with lots of comfortable seating, good lamps, free wireless internet, new mattresses—and miracle of miracle—lovely thick, fluffy towels and high thread-count sheets. Seriously—I have stayed in so many beach rentals with nasty, threadbare linens, not to mention pillows that looked like the dog slept on them! Not every Mermaid Cottage I stayed in had a big kitchen—I was stunned to learn that some people don’t actually like to cook on their vacations—but they were all workable. And listen to this—when I opened the cupboards, I found full sets of matching dishes, flatware, glasses and silverware. The pots and pans weren’t the goofy assortment of banged-up thrift-store rejects I found in other beach rentals. I once stayed in a rented beach house on Madeira Beach in St. Pete whose sole kitchen equipment was a lemon juicer, an egg beater and an enormous cast-iron frying pan.

Knowing we would be putting our future cottage in Mermaid’s rental program, we sought Diane’s advice during the hunt for the perfect beach house. This one? Diane would discreetly shake her head. The block was too noisy. That one? Eye roll. Only one bathroom, no shower. How about this one? Too far from the beach. That one? No parking.
Finally, she gave the thumbs up to the stinky, rat-infested rundown wreck that became The Breeze Inn, and gave us advice throughout the year-long renovation process.

Bedrooms didn’t have to be huge, she told us, but they did have to be welcoming. Forget walk-in closets at the beach, use that room to add a bathroom—you can never have enough showers or toilets on vacation. Kitchens needed to be efficient—and fully stocked. Some kind of porch was mandatory—screened-in would be best. All building materials had to be sturdy and low-maintenance, but high quality. We put in all new plumbing and electrical, and paid careful attention to the capacity of the new heat and air unit. Who wants to be hot at the beach?

While we were renovating, and even now, three years later, we did our market research—by staying in other Mermaid Cottages. I’ve lost count now, but I think I’ve probably slept in at least a dozen different Mermaids, including Nora’s, Heron Hideaway, Castaway (our closest neighbor since they are right next door) The Enlisted Men’s Mess, Mermaid’s Tale, Blue Heron, Fiddler on the Creek, Fish Camp and Back River Bungalow. For St. Patrick’s Day this past year, while our son, Boomerang Boy, and his post-college crowd stayed at our own house, we bunked quite comfortably at Back River Bungalow, which easily handled the dozen kids who showed up for the Friday night shrimp dinner we served. On our most recent Easter trip to Tybee, when we didn’t act fast enough to reserve The Breeze Inn, we checked in down the street at Southern Cross, which fit our three generations—including granddaughter Molly, quite nicely. Everybody raved about the generous wrap-around porches and the delightful outdoor spa.
Every time we’ve slept with a new Mermaid, we’ve found great ideas worth stealing. One cottage’s extensive DVD collection inspired me to start my own movie library at The Breeze Inn. (True confession; I rarely pay more than $5 for a movie, buying them at yard sales and bargain bins at discount stores.) At another, I copied the idea of hanging a simple cotton curtain as a closet door, for another, we stole a detail for our outdoor shower. The daybed we tucked into our downstairs stair hall was inspired by daybeds we spied in other cottages.

At the start of our third full summer of summer rentals, we’re still thrilled to be able to share our beloved Breeze Inn with our guests. When people ask how we can stand to let “strangers” rent our beautiful beach house, we just tell them we don’t rent to strangers, we rent to guests who appreciate and respect our home as much as we do. Yup. We’re still proud to be amongst the Mermaids.

Live Like a Local: The 25th Annual Beach Bum Parade!

We are so excited! This Friday, May 20th, is the 25th annual Beach Bum Parade here on Tybee! Never heard of it? Well, it's only known as the World's Largest Water Fight! That's right, this Friday you can come to Tybee and get wet! The Beach Bum Parade begins at 6 pm.m, so get here early for a spot along the parade route.

The parade began in 1987, but it's attendance has grown each year, and now it's a pretty big deal. Last year, it was estimated that between 10,000 and 20,000 people joined in and got water logged! The entry fee for the participating floats will have to help with added security costs this year, but in addition, any revenues left over goes right back into the Tybee community to aid the needy and help with other community projects through charity organizations throughout the island. How wonderful is that?! So, if you needed a reason to get wet, there's not a better one! Make sure you visit the picture galleries at Savannah Now to see all the fun from years past!

Now, we want to make sure this event is safe for everyone involved, so make sure to follow a few simple rules, and use some commonsense guidelines, if you are planning to join in the fun:

use water guns instead of buckets and hoses...we are a "Water First" community after all!
try to keep your water fight fun to your private yard until the official start of the parade
water balloons, buckets, and pressure washers are not allowed. They can damage things and hurt others, and that isn't any fun at all!
Play Nice, No Ice. Please do not use chilled water or ice cubes!
use your manners and please restrict your water targets to parade participants and on-lookers
obviously, the police are there for your protection. It is illegal to squirt of spray them...you won't like the results, and really, it's just plain disrespectful.
Lastly, please use only water, no other liquids are allowed!

In other words...use your noggin and your manners! The Beach Bum Parade is good clean fun and it has always been the official kick off to Tybee's busy summer season. We can't wait for Friday and we hope to see you there!

Bring your water batter gear and don your bathing suits because it is always a wet, wild, wonderful time!

Mermaid Sighting: Mermaids Everywhere!

Everyone here at Mermaid Cottages has known for a long time...Mermaids are everywhere! You just have to know where to look. Well, this article on USA Today was brought to our attention recently and of course, it got us all excited!

Mermaids have always been big with us, but it seems the rest of the world is catching on...and fast! We told you in an early April post(found here) about the newest Pirates of the Caribbean installment and it's mermaids, but now there are many more places where mermaids are surfacing. The article from USA Today even lead us to discover MerCon...the official Mermaid convention and, according to them, the largest gathering of mermaids in history! the 2011 convention is Las Vegas will have mermaideverything...performers, jewelry, you name it! How exciting would that be to attend? You can even check them out on Facebook on the World Mermaid Awards page!

The USA Today article even mentions that Twilight Saga author, Stephenie Meyer, will be tackling the subject of mermaids. She isn't the only one by far! Some other books out there are Mermaid by Carolyn Turgen, Dreamland Social Club by Tara Altebrando, andLost Voices, a book about a teenage girl's transformation into a mermaid, by Sara Porter. Through all the new mermaid reading in the article, we even discovered a new magazine, Mermaids & Mythology, coming out in 2011 dedicated to mermaids! There's just so much to be excited about as far as mermaids go, and we can't wait to see what's next! Check out this video we found all about real life mermaids!!

Mermaid Sighting: More Fabulous Art!

What do we love more than anything? OK, mermaids, that's true...but besides that? COLOR! Around here at Mermaid Cottages, we just love colorful art, and when we see work like this...we can't help but love it! These beautiful mermaids are the creations of artist Susanne Reisterer of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Susanne is a super talented lady and we just can't get enough of her fun, funky artwork! Here's what she had to say about her work:

Cottage Cheese: MY SHIP

"Mama, some time could we please stay more than just the one day at the beach? I want to sleep there so I can hear the waves and then wake up and play all day in the water," I remember being so hopeful as I pleaded. "Well, son. One day our ship will come in and we'll stay at the beach as long as we want," my mother replied with so much assurance that I still believe it to this day.

Santa Claus. The Easter Bunny. The Tooth Fairy. They all bit the dust in due time. For me, all my Mom had to say was, "One day our ship will come in...". I was hooked. Still am. I wanted things. I dreamed and I fantasized. I believed. She often told me, "You take away a person's dreams and you take away his will to live." I estimate I'll be around another 200 years or so. My list is long.

My mother loved the beach. She talked about it. She collected sea shells my whole life. For a time she created her own seashell mosaic on the outside of our house under her kitchen window. I guess that's where I got my love for the sea, but for my entire childhood I never remember a time that we stayed more than the one day at a time at the beach. We'd get up early, pile in the car and make the 2 hour drive down to the coast. Late afternoon, my father would announce, "Y'all get in the car. It's time to go home." More than once he had to wade into the surf and pull me out kicking and screaming. I'd rather risk a whipping than to leave the beach and many times I got one for not coming in when he called. I'd sit facing the rear window of the car, straining to see the water for as long as I could. Each time we left to go home I'd start dreaming about when I might see the sea again.

As an adult I've made many trips to the beach and spending the night near the sea is always just as magical as I imagined it would be. In her last years, I even took my Mom to the beach a few times and we felt like our ship really had come in. We'd talk on the phone, we'd conspire, we'd make plans and off we'd go. I could see it in her eyes. She thought the sea was magical, too. That, and the fact that we thought we were pulling a fast one by slipping out of town without getting caught.

I guess that's why I now find so much comfort at the beach. Sometimes, I just stand there on the shore watching the waves roll, tasting the sweet salt of the sea on my tongue and scanning the horizon. I still believe that one day my ship will come in. Except, now I long to see that ship come in to view with something more meaningful to me than anything money could buy. I want to see my loved ones waiving from the rail as it comes closer to shore. There'd be Mom and beside her my grandmother and grandfather. Mom was Scarlett O'Hara, Lucille Ball and Mother Teresa all in one. My Mimi was a great character. She was spoiled first by her brothers and then by my grandfather, hence the nickname, "Sweetie Pie". My grandfather passed on before I was born, but people have always told me he was a great man, so I just want to know him. And, I also have great news to share with them.

I want them to know that even though we were sad to see them go we have carried on as best we can and we think of them often. As time has passed I still miss them, but now it's getting easier to remember the best of times we had. I want them to know that all the love and care they lavished on us was not wasted. The grandchildren are now grown and most have started families of their own. Mom got to meet most of her great grandchildren, but some new ones are on the way! Remarkably, I see a little bit of them in each of the children. Somehow it all works out. I guess that's how it's supposed to be.

Mom, I'll be back on Tybee soon. I'm staying in a beautiful house right on the beach. I'll be looking, so y'all get up a load and sail by if you can. I'll be looking for the ship to come in.

And, if you happen to see me standing there on the shore, looking out on the horizon you can come join me. You don't even have to bring small talk. Just help me look out upon the ocean. One day my ship will come in. It'll be carrying what I most want in the world.

It's about dreaming so that I might go on living the life my mother wanted me to have.

Mermaids in Our Midst: Laurel Johns and Grey Dog Studio

Around here, one thing we love more than just about anything is amazing artwork! We love filling our cottages with the work of local and regional artists, and we are always on the lookout for fabulous creations. One of our favorite Georgia artists is Laurel Johns and her Grey Dog Studio!

Laurel makes hand crafted sea glass and stained glass artwork, as well as wonderfully unique functional pieces, like night lights, home decor, and utensils! She is super talented, making the fact that she was named the 2010 Artist of the Year at the 15th Annual Arts in the Park in Belfast, Maine no surprise! She, her work, and her home have also been featured in Water's Edge magazine (check out the article here)!

Laurel has spent most of her life on the Georgia coast and attended the University of Georgia in Athens. She initially intended to study biology, but instead, followed her "heart and grades" and switched her studies to the arts, where she formally trained in painting, sculpture, and jewelry making.

Laurel first began her work in stained glass in Athens, and though she still paints, she feels glass allows her to more freely express her love of color and light. She had no idea when she started working with glass that it would one day become her business. "I just started making things that I enjoyed looking at." Then, she says, it occurred to her that others might enjoy as well. And of course...we do! Each piece Laurel crafts is hand-constructed and no two are alike. We adore her coastal inspired style and unique work!

Laurel is also a fellow dog lover (check out our Beach Bum Biscuits post about her pups here) and works under the watchful eyes of her beloved Weimaraners, Tucker and Oliver. Laurel, her husband, Tucker and Oliver make their home on Hird Island here on the Georgia coast, and also spend their summers in Tenants Harbor, Maine. Live Like a Local: 2nd Annual "37th" Tybee Seafood Festival!

We are SO excited! The 2nd Annual "37th" Tybee Seafood Festival starts today! Founded in April of 2010 and named in honor of the fictitious carnival in the movie, The Last Song, it is Tybee's annual seafood festival, complete with a carnival! The Seafood Review -the Main Event- will be held at the Pier Saturday, May 7th, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and admission is free, so make plans to be there! The festival fun is sponsored by Chatham County and the City of Tybee Island and features delicious local favorites prepared by the island's finest restaurants and caterers. There will also be wonderful live performances by local musicians, so don't miss a minute!

This family friendly event runs May 4th through May 8th with a Mega Midway Carnival, sponsored by the wonderful Tybee Arts Association. It is only $1 admission per person per day, so its affordable! You can also purchase $20 wristbands each day for unlimited rides! While you're downtown, don't forget to enjoy the nearby Tybee Island Marine Science Center, take time to relax on the beach, and browse Tybee's unique island shops and galleries. Make a weekend out of it all!

We love how many Mermaids and Mermen there are out there! And, even if you can’t live on Tybee Island with us, we keep trying to find ways to include you. Y’all are just so darn creative and did such an amazing job with suggestions on new cottage names (Tucked Inn at Tybee, Made in the Shade)...that's why we need your help again. We need you to help us with our tag line!

A tag line is a sentence or series of words that help describe a business, company or product. Nike’s “Just Do It” is one of the best examples! We've had two tag lines in the past - Discovery the Magic of Slowing Down and Cozy Cottages and Historic Homes away from Home - but we are looking for a new one! We need to find a way to help express what the Mermaid Cottages experiences all about. Even if you’ve never been to Tybee or stayed at our cottages, you can visit our Blog, Twitter, and Facebook pages and see what we are all about! Some examples might be Blissful Beach Cottages, Cozy Up with Us, or Pure and Intentional Relaxation. We need to keep the tag lines to within six to ten words, but you can be shorter as well. We had such a blast a few weekends ago in Savannah at the 187th Annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration and Parade! Well, what holiday is complete without a mermaid? This festive mermaid makes her home in Savannah at East Harris Street!

Gorgeous, and decked out in St. Patty's Day garb! How fun is that? I hope she enjoyed the celebrations as much as everyone else did!

Cottage Cheese: HE'S A RUNNER!

Labels. Nick-names. Memories. Selective Memory. Telling it like it was. The good ole days.

We received a truly honest and heart-felt Thank-You note from a recent guest this week. It was from a teacher who had recently stayed with us at Fiddler On The Creek Cottage. She politely thanked us for our MTLC (Mermaids Tender Loving Care) and told us how wonderful her cottage had been. Then, she added a little tidbit that started me to thinking. She said she had really needed the break from teaching and her students and that the experience had helped her make a mental adjustment so that she could return to her teaching duties and make it the rest of the year.

Poor thing. She sounded as if she had had a challenging year, but you could tell she was a wonderful teacher and was really dedicated to her students. It got me thinking and ya'll know how dangerous that is! Times sure are different. I remembered being good in school when I was a little boy. Polite. Obedient. Respectful. I can remember my mother saying, "Ya'll act like a bunch of wild animals around here, but don't let me catch you cutting up out in public. Ya'll know right from wrong and you better remember your manners. If you get in trouble at school I hope the teacher wears your bottom out and just know you'll get it twice as bad when you get home!"

My mother. I loved her dearly. The most honest, sincere, funny, loving, gracious, well-mannered and conscientious person I ever knew. She wasn't kidding just a little bit! It was well known in all circles that if any adult saw one of her children misbehaving in church or school or anywhere in public they had her permission to tear us up and then let her know about it. When we got home we'd get double whupped for showing out in public and for casting aspersions about her ability to raise well behaved children. Would you believe she had spies everywhere and they did not hesitate to follow her instructions to the letter?

Yes, times were different when I was a boy in grade school. I had never given my teachers a rooster hair's worth of stress. Funny thing about memories. They're kind of like the old timey news reels. If you revisit them often enough you sometimes remember things you had all but forgotten.

You see. I had been a good boy, alright. Except in first grade. We didn't have kindergarten when we lived, so I had never been away from my mother until I went to school. I was always so quiet and content to play right by myself at home. Who knew that a new environment would bring out the most god awful, throw down in the floor, holy terror of a demon child that ever walked the face of this earth. Yes sirree, bob-tailed, Louie! They called me The Runner!

My poor mother could not even volunteer at my school for fear that I'd see her and have a complete melt-down. If I ever caught sight of my mother or her car in the school parking lot I would go off like someone had lit the fuse to a stick of dynamite! I could have easily replaced Linda Blair in THE EXORCIST. It didn't matter if the door was locked, the windows closed or what size the person standing between my mother and me. If I couldn't get to her I'd head straight for her car and slide up under it. It would take 3 or 4 adults grabbing at me from all sides to pull me from under the car. I'd be growling and hissing and gnashing my teeth. I seem to now recall my teacher seeming just a tad frazzled a few times.

I don't think my first grade teacher had a relaxing beach cottage to get away to after my "episodes". Come to think of it she retired shortly after I left first grade. Sorry, Mrs. Williams.

Maybe if she had had a retreat to regain her sanity and to heal from the shin bruises and bite marks I gave her she'd have lasted a little longer. What do ya'll think?

It's about owning up to our faults and short-comings. It's about apologizing no matter how much time has lapsed since we erred. It's about giving yourself permission for a time-out when you need it. It's about expressing yourself even if you know there just might be consquences. It's how we learn.

Mermaids in Our Midst: Barb Ogden

   This week, our Mermaid is near and dear to all of us at Mermaid Cottages. Barb Ogden has been with us here on Tybee for a few years now, and in that time, has not only been a friend but has become a part of our family. Barb left her career in financial services to care for her mother, then moved to Tybee, and she and her two Corgies have been an important part of our lives ever since!
   As far as Mermaid Cottages, Barb has always gone above and beyond in every aspect of her work. From guest services to reservations, networking to logistics, there's nothing Barb can't do! She's been especially helpful in coordinating and volunteering with our Mermaids Give Back efforts.
   Barb has decided to step back for some more time for herself and family, and we want to tell her just how much we love and appreciate her and everything she's done here at Mermaid Cottages and on Tybee. Barb, you are a wonderful person and friend, and we are so glad to claim you in our family of Mermaids!
   Thankfully though, Barb is going to continue volunteering with us in our Mermaids Give Back events, so we won't be in complete Barb-withdrawal! Barb, we wish you all the joy you so richly deserve...and all the laid-back, sand-in-your-shoes Tybee Time you can handle! We love you!

Live Like a Local: Mermaids Give Back

It's that time again! We are planning to be at Tybee's Oceanside Nursing home for another Mermaids Give Back event, and we'd love to see you there. Spring has sprung here on our lovely island, and Easter is right around the corner. Come join all the mermaids and mer-men as we make paper-mâché eggs with the residents at Oceanside. We want to celebrate everything wonderful about Spring and bring a smile to some very special people while we're at it!

If you'd like to join us, we'd love to have you! We will be at Oceanside Nursing Home (located at 77 Van Horne Street) today, March 23rd, at 3:15 p.m. and also Thursday and Friday, March 24th and 25th, at 2:15 and 2:30 p.m. respectively. We have a 100% voluntary military made up of less than 1% of our population. They live in every town and city and state in our country and around the world. You and I have many photos and memories to cherish and we should honor, celebrate, help, support and recognize the contributions of those who serve.

I'm always so excited to hear from you, our guests! One thing I also never get tired of is seeing pictures guests send. The smiles and happy faces always brighten my day! I recently received one such email from Nancy with these fabulous pictures of their stay at Ya'll Come Inn Cottage.
I'm always smiling after seeing pictures like these! Ya'll Come Inn is a great cottage for groups for any kind...especially Paula Deen fans. Nancy even sent a picture of her signed cookbook for us to see!

Live Like a Local: Fun at The Crab Shack!

We all had a blast this weekend at Tybee's Isiah Heritage Parade! The entire island was decked out in green, and the Luck o' the Irish was in the air. You can't help but smile at a parade...especially when you see something like this. This was definitely one of my favorites!

Well, the fun is far from over around here! The Crab Shack is welcoming back friends from Junkanoo World in the Bahamas! Barabbas and the Tribe will be at the Shack daily from 6 to 8 p.m. performances through March 17th. You can also see them in Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade. If you haven't experienced this amazing expression of Bahamian culture, you absolutely need to catch the show! It's an explosion of costumes, dance, and drums you have to see to believe.

The Crab Shack is also welcoming the New York Shields Pipes and Drums Band March 18th. This is a performance Tybee looks forward to every year and its a definite must to wrap up your St. Patty's Day in style! The show starts around 7 p.m. so make plans to be there. To those of us who already know and love our beautiful island, we know Tybee Island is the perfect place that happens to be a little piece of heaven on earth! Well, we are so excited to share some wonderful news. Tybee Island and Mermaid Cottages is getting noticed and we couldn’t be more proud! Tybee and Mermaid Cottages were recently featured in an article in Atlanta Magazine! Along with the wonderful words about our beautiful island, the authors of the article recommended Mermaid Cottagesas the place to stay when visiting. They even mentioned their stay at Nora’s Cottage! The island is all aflutter with activity. Everyone is getting ready for Spring! Mermaid Cottages is no exception…we are super excited for the warmer weather and just can’t stop ourselves from primping, preening, and fluffing to our hearts’ content. Speaking of, Fish Camp Cottage is one of those newly fluffed and fabulous homes. The cottage’s owner has been hard at work over the winter collecting cool decor and freshening up for Spring!

Fish Camp Cottage is filled with fun art, comfy places to relax, and a beautiful garden in which to wile away many a lazy afternoon. The family room has a new 37″ High Def television with a BlueRay/DVD player, and the kitchen has been refreshed with paint and new touches as well! Now, I like leprechauns as much as the next guy. Heck, I believe in them just in case there really is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I am. if nothing else, an optimist...or gullible...either way it works for me.

Legend has it that you're supposed to wear green on St. Patrick's Day so that you'll be invisible to those leprechauns. If you don't wear green they can see you and they'll pinch you. Pinched. Another wince.

Wear green or get pinched. Come to find out it's not even an Irish thing. St. Patrick chose the green three leaf clover as a way to explain and define the trinity. God The Father, The Holy Spirit and The Son. Irish soldiers wore green as a sign of rebellion at the start of the Irish Revolution. Heck, in the very beginning green wasn't even the official color of St. Patrick's Day. It was blue! And, they never even did the whole pinching thing. Pinched.   Another wince.

The wearing of the green or get pinched thing was an American invention. Shucks, if I didn't know better I'd swear my dear saintly mother started the whole thing. My mother was not Irish and she was no leprechaun. She was Southern Baptist. That's a whole different ball game than any mere cultural tradition.

You see, when you're born in the deep south chances are you're brought up in some type of religious environment. For me, that meant I was part of a rural farm family where church was the social hub of the community. We went to church every Sunday morning, every Sunday night, every Wednesday night and every time the church doors were opened.  We even had our own pew. My grandmother sat on one pew. My mother sat behind her.  I could sit on either pew, but there was a strict code of decorum no matter which one I occupied.  And, we're talking Southern Baptist which meant they were hard wooden pews, too. You ain't being a good Christian if you're comfortable during the service.

Then there's the whole hellfire and brimstone sermons the preacher rained down on us poor sinners every time he took the pulpit.  Lucky for me I had already figured out by the time I was seven or eight years old the wages of sin he warned us about each week didn't really apply to me.  I was just a kid. I didn't have a job or any way to make money so I was exempt from the tithing thing and I was too busy playing to be coveting anything my neighbor had and I never dared to show off the cuss words I knew...at least not in front of anyone that would tell on me.

So, that meant while that preacher was bent on stepping on everyone else's toes I was free to swing my legs, look around and day dream.   That is, so long as I limited my movements and didn't draw attention to our pew. My mother had perfect poise and dressed in her Sunday best and fully understood that her reputation as a good wife and mother was to be demonstrated by the prim and proper behavior of her children in church. From time to time my day dreaming and mind wandering would make me forget just where I was, but my mother had a sure fire way of bringing me back into the fold. Without even uttering a word. Never turning her head in my direction. Her eyes would glare at me from the side of her beautiful face. Her chin would tilt downward ever so slightly. Drawing my eyes down towards her lap. There it was. Her right hand cocked into the shape of a claw. A Pincher. Coiled tighter than a rattlesnake about to strike. Her thumb and finger clamping shut and then opening in rapid succession. I was being warned.

Let me tell you. Getting pinched by my mother was kind of like squeezing a tube of Brylcreem in hopes of taming the cowlicks that populated my hairline. A little dab will do ya. I quickly learned it was best to heed the warning. If not, with lighting speed my mother could pinch the tar out of you, recoil and re-cock for another strike. If I made even a whimper she'd yank me up, take me outside, dust my backside good and then usher me all the way back down the aisle to our pew. She wasn't having it. It made a lasting impression.

So, ya'll go ahead. Tempt the fates and not wear green on St. Patrick's Day. Get pinched all you want. It holds no fascination for me. I'll be surrounding myself with every shade of green in the universe. Kelly green, grass green, lime, pistachio, mint, sea foam, dark green and light green. I ain't taking any chances, so I'll even have teal, turquoise, aquamarine and every shade of green I see.

Lucky for me they've got em all over Tybee and the Mermaid Cottages are eat up with it, too!

It's Irish Heritage Celebration, ya'll. It's about wearing o' the green. It's about life lessons. It's about showing respect for any house of worship, no matter what the religion. It's about remembering someone once loved and cared for me enough to make me behave. It's COTTAGE CHEESE!

Mermaids in Our Midst: Sue Tobey White

We recently had the good fortune of having a superb artist come for a stay at Mermaid Cottages! Sue Tobey White is a sculptor and painter from Belfast, Maine. Her vibrant, color filled canvases invite you in and surround you with delicious textures and fun themes. From her beautiful beach scenes and lively dancers to her delectable vegetables, there's no way to keep from smiling when viewing her work!
If you ever get the chance to visit Belfast, Sue's gallery is a must-see! She founded the High Street Studio and Gallery in 2002 and now she and other artists have their work there.

Sue taught elementary art for fifteen years in the Belfast area and now offers classes and workshops at High Street Gallery. Her work is inspired by the colors and symbols of children's art as well as her love of Maine and her surroundings. Sue received her Bachelor degree in Art Education at Southern Connecticut State College and has attended numerous workshops in multiple mediums including watercolor, mask making, puppetry, clay, collage, doll sculpture, and color theory. According to Sue, workshops help to feed her need to create!

We are so honored to claim Sue as a fellow Mermaid. Hopefully, she will make it back to Tybee real soon! Live Like a Local: Erinn go Brach Ya'll!

Woohoo! Its that time of year again...this Saturday, March 12th, is the Tybee Island Irish Heritage Parade! We are even more excited about it because we had a blast a few weeks ago making festive hats with the residents of the Oceanside nursing home for their trolley ride. Tybee's Irish Heritage Celebration is a fun, family friendly way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and, I don't know about you, but I can hardly wait! The parade starts at City Hall and will proceed down Butler Avenue all the way to Tyrbisa Street. Get your green on and head out for a spot, because the fun starts at 3 pm and you don't want to miss it!

The St. Patrick's Day fun doesn't stop there either. Savannah's famous St. Patrick's Day Celebration gets started on the green day itself, Thursday March 17th, and runs through Saturday, March 19th! This will be the 187th celebration, and you have to be there! Visit the event website for a full schedule of events, but the festivities begin early at 8 am at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist with the St. Partick's Day Mass, followed by the huge parade kick-off at 10:15 am. Savannah will even be getting in the Irish mood early with The Greening of the Fountain in Forsyth Park on March 11th, so it's really a city wide affair!

Mermaid Sighting: Beary Clever Art from Sue Tobey White

This week, we really have a special treat. A beautiful piece by our friend Sue Tobey White, a fabulous artist from Belfast, Maine, is our featured mermaid sighting!
A few years ago, Belfast had fiberglass bears, much like other cities...Chicago had cows, Tybee has turtles and so on. Well, Sue was one of the artists participating! Sue was kind enough to email a little information to us.

"We could choose between a standing-on-all-fours or a standing bear, on two legs, and create what we wanted. I chose the one on two legs. We cut off the legs, made a tail, and created Bearielle, the mer-bear.She is now on Nantucket Island at the home of someone who collects mermaids!"

   Isn't Bearielle fabulous? Of course, I adore this quirky, unique mermaid! Thank you so much for sharing her with us Sue. You can read more about Bearielle and the other Belfast Bears at the Belfast Bearfest website; they are all so much fun!

COTTAGE CHEESE:Working The Mask

It's MARDI GRAS TYBEE, Ya'll!

All the time I hear people say, "I'm coming out from behind the mask" or "I'm lifting the veil and letting it all hang out" and "I'm out in the open without a mask".

Not me. I'd rather wear a mask every day. For some of us, meaning mainly MOI, its gets tough to hide our emotions or put on a brave face or remain stoic amidst adversity or when people shock us. Such is life.

I've lead training, made speeches, championed causes and performed all of my life. I've also worked undercover, conducted investigations, dealt with crime and corruption and all the deadly sins at one time or another. And, lived to tell about it.

But, you gotta admit. There's something magical about wearing a mask. For me, it's just that little bit of buffer between me and the real world that helps me rise to the situation at hand. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I'm also prone to conjuring up various fantasies when I need to be "ON".

The real me gets shocked easily and the older I get (I can't say I've gotten all the more wiser) the harder it is for me to maintain my composure and not look shocked, scared, confused, dazed, aghast and yes, even like someone has licked all the red off my apple. But, even when I'm perturbed it doesn't carry much weight. I just can't pull off menacing or ruthless or intimidating. I'm a perennial Buckwheat.  Invade my personal space and my locks stand on in, my eyes bug out and my mouth flies open.

So, I'm all about the masks. Cover up most of my goofiness and I can concentrate on keeping my eyes from opening too wide and wrench my mouth closed. A Mardi Gras mask means I can convince myself I was an Italian gigolo in a past life.  I can be part of the "in-crowd" when in costume. The noise from the celebration also masks my shrieks when something shocks me. I'm really under cover!

Thus, thank goodness for the folks at Tybee Fest and Mardi Gras Tybee!  Can't we make it a year round celebration? Fortunately, the Tybee Irish Heritage Celebration is next and maybe that will hold me over until the next Pirate Fest.  Or else, I'll just have to become a costumed comic book character. Either way, I'll fit right in on Tybee Island. Quirky works on Tybee. It's good, right?

Mermaids in Our Midst: Fallon's Hair Cut

This week, there's an extra special Mermaid we'd like to tell you about! Fallon O'Neill (daughter of the owners of Sea Glass Cottage, Little Fish Cottage, and Tim's Beach Gear!) has been growing her lovely locks for a while now, but just recently had 10 inches lopped off for a great cause!
Here's the email Fallon's mom, Tracy, sent to us:

"Hi Everyone!
Fallon has been growing her hair out for several years and went yesterday to get it cut (9.5 inches to be exact)! She's donating her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, an organization that makes wigs for people with cancer. She was very excited and LOVES her new short, sassy haircut (and I do too!). It definitely fits her personality!! Here are some pictures of the big event...

Live Like a Local: Mardi Gras on Tybee!

It's that time again...time to say goodbye to the chilly temperatures of winter. What, you ask, is the best way to do that? Well, the only way Tybee does anything...throw a party!
Join all of Tybee this weekend for the island's 3rd Annual Mardi Gras celebration! This party will include all the traditions of Mardi Gras, an event that dates back to the ancient Romans. Tybee will be decked out in her finest for the occasion! The fun starts this Friday, March 3rd, with the Fantasy Masquerade Ball at Frannie's on the Beach. Make sure to get your tickets and don your best glitz and glamor for this party! There will be prizes for the best dressed, not to mention the crowning of the king and queen!

If you can't make it Friday, no worries! The celebrations continue Saturday, March 4th. Join us for the Mardi Gras Parade at 1 pm down Butler Avenue, followed by a street party, free live music from great local bands, and a bazaar themed party at the pavilion until 6 pm.

COTTAGE CHEESE.The Oops Club

I called my auto insurance company yesterday to check some details. "Oh, hi! I see you've been a member of our insurance team since 2000", chirped the cheery voice on the other end of the phone.

I needed a new yard rake so I whipped out my well worn home supply card only to hear the clerk inform me, "You've gotten all the good out of this card. Let me help you order a new one. You've been with us since 1990, so you deserve another."

Later, the phone rang and against my better judgement I answered it instead of letting it go to voicemail. "Hey, haven't seen you at the gym lately. Your membership is paid, but we don't ever see you!"

Memberships. Keeping tabs. A record of my behavior, good and bad. It's all out there.

It started me thinking. What had been my longest membership? It didn't take long for one affiliation to stand out. The Oops Club! Oops, I was talking with my hands and spilled my soda. Oops, I was talking instead of looking where I was going and stepped in something yucky. Oops, I climbed on top of my dad's tractor, unscrewed the gas cap, laid on top of the gas tank and sniffed it until I fell off. Oops, still groggy I somehow decided the tractor needed to be personalized, so I took a nail and scratched my dad's name in the paint. Oops, indeed. The Oops Club. Lifetime member.

I guess my Oops track record explains my fascination with how well some folks can keep things looking so nice! How do you make a home look so clean and nice and well kept despite kids, pets, slovenly spouses and house guests? And, what about the sun, sand, hilarity and the it's not mine, so what do I care vacation rental contingent?

It's magic. Mermaid Magic. A couple of really impressive secrets I've observed during my trips to Mermaid Cottages and Tybee Island...slip covers and quality upholstery fabrics keep even the highest traffic areas looking clean and beautiful. Live Like a Local: Mermaids Make a Difference!

This will be a fun event and will help to bring a little fun and smiles to Tybee's nursing home residents.

"I spotted this lovely lady in Pittsburgh. We were really trying to get home to Erie, but got totally lost in downtown after a wrong turn! It was a wonderful surprise to see a mermaid...almost like it was destiny!"

LIFE LESSON: If one lives long enough he learns that the stresses of life are relevant and that his parenting skills will be challenged. Challenged by his children and in the absence of actual children by his dogs. And so it is.

You might have noticed the sun has been shining and the temperatures much warmer, lately. This is a welcome change after having spent the weeks since Christmas in cold, bitter and biting sleet, snow, ice and gray skies along with three holy terrors that have been giving the Axis of Evil a run for the title.

My children. My dogs.

You see, as one of those who knew better than to procreate I went out and got pets. How much trouble could they be? It's not like I'm raising three teens. Or am I?

I turned off the central air, opened the windows and the door onto our deck. I could almost hear the Fifth Dimension singing "Let The Sunshine In." I became buried in my work, encouraged by the fresh air. Little did I know that same fresh air would also become doggy crack!

Moxie, by dainty, girly, white Westie decided there was buried treasure in the back yard (meaning there was a mole or some type of critter under the grass that she needed to meet) and she proceeded to dig a hole deep enough I could only see the tip of her tale wagging in the air as dirt, grass and mud was flying all around her. Jett, my mischievious Black Scottie, made the decision to take all of his toys and scatter them throughout the yard. And, when his toy box was empty he graduated to my closet and managed to do the same with all my shoes! Barney, my senior Dachshund, who normally just naps most of the day, figured out the stuffed animals that Jett had strategically placed in all the dirt and mud Moxie dug up needed doggy CPR. Inside the house. Which consists of him making a hole in them and masterfully pulling the stuffing out. All of the stuffing. It was sunny outside, but it looked like my entire den was covered in snow!

I was now sharing my home with Satan's Spawn, The Demon Seed and Cujo. Again.

LIFE LESSON #2: When the house gets too small and the walls start closing in head to Tybee!

Now, I'm sure you've had some experiences similar to mine. You make the decision to spend the money on a little getaway. You make the reservation. You get there and find it's so small you can hardly cuss a cat without getting fur in your mouth. Not so at Mermaid Cottages.

And, when I determine that I need as much of a time out as my dogs I go for one of the bigger cottages. That way we can each find our own quiet space, stay out of each others' way. We can lounge in the living room/den, while away the hours on a porch, read a book outside in the beautiful fenced in yard or take a nap in any of the many rooms available to us. Everybody gets their own space.

That's the great thing about Inlet Breeze Cottage. Lots of space!

Well, that and the fact that right out the front door and across the road is Burton's By The Beach!

Never let anyone tell you you won't find incredible food choices on Tybee Island! I love to stroll up to the window at Burton's, order up one of my favorites like their famous Fish Tacos or their fantastic paella. And, in the warmer months be sure to get the pistachio ice cream for dessert!

It's about giving yourself a time out when you need it. It's about using your children or your dogs as an excuse when you feel you need one. It's as much about staying in an incredible beach cottage close to good eats as anything.

Mermaid Sighting: Fripp Island Giggle!

From time to time, I get to visit another favorite place...Fripp Island, South Carolina. I was there a little while back and, while shopping for fun cottage finds, I spotted these beautiful ladies! What a grouping, huh? I was curious to know...what do you call a grouping of mermaids? A search of the internet didn't really answer the question well, but one suggestion I saw was a "giggle". I like that, so...I suppose this is a rare sighting of a giggle of mermaids!

We'll be walking the south beach to clean up trash in preparation for Sea Turtle Nesting Season.

The less trash on the beach the less trash there will be to end up in the water which means less chance the trash can harm our beautiful sea turtles, dolphins and Right Whales as they pass through!

Bring you own trash bags and meet us at our newest Mermaid Cottage on the beach, Doyles on the Beach, at #2 18th Lane..

There's plenty of parking at #2 or #4 18th Lane, but as always, the best way to enjoy Tybee is by walking or riding a bike.

"Buddy, you ain't even the weirdest person in this room...nor at this party...let alone on Tybee Island".

I was at a party on Tybee Island and I had just announced that my goal was to be the quirkiest person on Tybee. I had a goal. I was on a mission. Only to be shot down.

I was Shocked! Shocked! Shocked, I tell you! And crushed! Did I say I was SHOCKED?

For most of my life my parents did their best to try and give me instructions on how to live my life. I heard the Desiderata more times than I can remember.

"Son, don't ever let anyone put you down or make you think you're not worthy of success and good things that happen to you. But, most of all, never think that you're better than anyone else. You're just as good as anyone else, but never let yourself think you're better than anyone else."

Along with, "You can be anything you want to be. Dream it, believe it, be it." That's what was said, but like most parents mine wanted to spare me from the uncertainties of this world by teaching me to always (and I mean ALWAYS) follow the rules. Don't make waves. Don't take unnecessary chances. Don't rock the boat. Don't color outside the lines. Be a doctor, lawyer, accountant or something of value that you can always depend on. Hard work will take you places.

For years I was wound so tight, buttoned all the way up, walked the straight and narrow and stayed well within the lines.

That is...until my first trip to Tybee Island. I was a late bloomer. I had seen the movie. I had read THE BOOK. Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil. I had been introduced to a culture where colorful, kooky, weird, eccentric and quirky people had fun. I had a revelation. Life could be fun, laughs could be had and people that didn't worry so much lived longer.

I was a caterpillar about to enter a cocoon with plans to emerge as a fully formed colorful social butterfly. I was poised to let it all hang out. I was going to earn a reputation.

Yet, it just wasn't to be. My hopes had been dashed. Blown to smithereens by some guy in a corner at a party that had overheard my declaration. He was full of truth serum (meaning Budweiser). It was as if the universe had reminded me it was not in the stars for me to color outside the lines.

And I never even got to share my fascination with pillows. Yep. I'm a pillow freak. I like them all. The kind you sleep on. The kind you sit on. The kind you kick back and relax on. In the bedroom. In the den. In the garden. On the floor. Pillows, pillows everywhere. Cords, tassels, buttons, fringe, embroidery. You name it. Never met a pillow I didn't like.

Lucky for me I get to indulge myself in the wonderful and colorful pillows throughout the Mermaid Cottages collection. I can flit from room to room. Lie down on a pillow. Sit on a pillow. Hug a pillow. Repose on a bed of pillows. Fantasize. Dream. Relax. Be whomever I want to be.

Just like pillows everywhere.

Life is better when you add your own flavor.

It's about adding a little cord here. Dangle a little fringe there. Pop on a button or two. Get the big box of 64 color crayons. And most of all...color outside the lines as often as you can!

We decided to get a place at the beach, and we were so happy to have found Canty's Cottage! The location was quiet and away from the "beaten path". The rooms were very comfortable, and the little details like plenty of beach towels, spices in the pantry, and books to read on the shelf were so homey. Live Like a Local: Savannah's 22nd Annual Black Heritage Festival

Tuesday not only began a new month for us, but also marked the beginning of Black History Month and the kick off of Savannah's 22nd Annual Black Heritage Festival! This event is free, opened to the public, and runs through Sunday, February 13th.
Every year there are acticities for all ages to enjoy, and all sorts of wonderful exhibits and shows to see. Just check out last year's photo gallery for a taste! The City of Savannah and Savannah State University present this festival and there's a lot to see and do, from visual and performing arts, crafts, cultural education, and music to dancing and historic tours. There will also be a Health and Wellness fair! Visit the official festival website for more information on the calendar of events and make plans to enjoy all the goings-on!

One highlight not to be missed in the day-long Grand Festival Day celebration. This year it's planned for February 12th in Savannah's Civic Center's Martin Luther King Jr. Arena. It's sure to be fabulous fun! So, if you are craving a little culture, food, and fun, Savannah's Black Heritage Festival is definitely something to check out!

Mermaid Sighting: Mermaid Cat!

Mostly, you see mermaids pictured as beautiful maidens with lithe, curvy figures and flowing hair. But, every once in a while, you see something else. I just adore this Mermaid Cat...or Mercat, whatever floats your boat. It's whimsical, cute, and totally unexpected, and I love that!

This unique mermaid is by Sandi of Sandi's Shellscapes on Etsy. The artist is even located near Daytona Beach, FL like our sighting from last week! She has a wonderful shop full of lovelies, so make sure you pay her a visit and get your sea shell fix.

Fun. Food. Family. Friends.

Did I say FOOD? At my home that means hot, spicy, gorgeous, involved, provocative, rich, emotional food.

I like to quote Paula Deen, "I'm your cook...not your cardiologist"! If you ain't 'sposed to eat it don't stuff it in your mouth. You stick to the celery sticks filled with cream cheese or peanut butter and the rest of us will suffer through chili, hot wings, ribs, steamed oysters, jalapenos wrapped in bacon, clams and sausage, melon and tomatoes and feta salad.

Thus brings me to the top of the "Real Important Details" list for a Super Bowl party...W.O.S.

Of course, summer is Tybee's busy season, but we here at Mermaid Cottages love seeing our winter guests! Lan sent us this wonderful email after her recent trip to Tybee:

Just want to let you know that we feel right at home here in Doodlebug Cottage and we love the peace and quiet of winter on Tybee. I had contacted quite a few rental companies with properties along the coast of Georgia, and you were the friendliest and easiest to work with, you made it so easy for us to come to Tybee and we are grateful for that. Our dog Grace wants to send her "heartfelt thank you" as well, she loves Doodlebug cottage!

Live Like a Local: The Tybee Critz Run!

It's hard to believe it is already February! That means it's time for the Tybee Critz Run, a 5K and Half Marathon. This year's race day is Saturday, February 5th! Last year, the Tybee Critz Run raised and presented $40,500 to the Savannah Community Foundation. The funds went to provide scholarships for local students in need. So, The Critz Run is a great reason to get those running shoes on! All the fun actually gets started the day before the race, Friday February 4th, with the Annual St. Michael's Spaghetti Dinner.

All you runners and pasta lovers can make plans to be at St. Michael's Parrish Center, located at 714 Lovell Avenue and 8th Street. The meal includes spaghetti with meat sauce, bread, dessert, and drink, so be there from 5:30 to 7:30pm to get your carbs for the big race on Saturday! Tickets for the meal are available at the door and are $9 for adults and $6 for children.

a recent SCAD graduate! Congrats Michael!

The 5K run begins at 8am sharp at the Historic Tybee Island Lighthouse and ends on 16th Street facing the pier and beautiful Tybee beaches. For those running the half marathon, the start time is 8:30 and the course begins on 15th Street near the famous Breakfast Club and ends on 16th Street where the 5K wraps up. For more information and logistics, make sure you visit the Tybee Critz Run website. The course maps are available there as well, but here's a little idea for you.

So, whether you are running or supporting from the sidelines, you'll know where to go! I'm running in the 5K this weekend! Hopefully I'll see you there! Good luck everyone!

COTTAGE CHEESE:OF CONTENT AND CHARACTER

It's been one of those weeks. For the last several weeks. I've been anxious to get back to Tybee to see my friends, walk with my dogs, have many, many awesome meals and to see all the activity going on at Mermaid Cottages. There are new cottages joining their already fantastic collection of homes and I want to be there to experience them first hand. Each cottage and home in the Mermaid Cottages collection has a content and a character that is unique and honorable and representative of what's best in this life.

Yet. I have been delayed. My journey has hit some bumps and snags. The content and character of some situations have left me dumbfounded. Bewitched, bothered and bewildered as the old song goes.

As you may remember from an earlier blog, on Christmas night a lady decided to turn her Volvo into a snow plow and demolished our little red convertible. Thus, our saga begins. Our insurance company was also her insurance company, so what were they to do? There was no other insurance company to go after to recoup our losses and no chance for said insurer to profit in this catastrophe. Initially, this mutual insurer refused to declare our car a total loss even though it had substantial frame damage. The adjusters claimed it could be fixed good as new if we would only agree to take it to a repair shop of their choice where they would only use the finest non-specific, no brand name, non manufacturer recommended replacement parts. UGH!

Once we finally won the right to have our battered car inspected by a collision specialist professional who summarily prescribed a "modest" repair estimate of over $20,000, we were informed we would be receiving a settlement that as of the writing of this blog is still in mediation. Their people are talking to our people. Well, you know how long that could take. And mind you, once the insurer begrudgingly totaled our car they stopped paying for our rental car.

It was time to go car shopping. Everyone loves a new car, right? We sat down and began adding up our available resources. We would have to go ahead and purchase a new car while we simultaneously battled our insurer over the replacement cost of our wrecked one. I began checking my bank accounts and noticed something was amiss. Even through I religiously schedule advance online payments to any open credit account I have, there was a note on two credit cards at one mega bank that said PAST DUE. WHAT??????

I called the customer service number, patiently waited the requisite 40+ minutes for a live person to join me for a conversation only to get this response. "We are sorry to inform you that we now have 28 million online banking customers, so sometimes mistakes happen. You are correct in that you did properly schedule advance payment on your card balances, but we recently went through a substantial system upgrade to better serve you, our valued customer, and it resulted in the loss of pre-scheduled payments entered by you and many other of our customers." WHAT????? I queried, " So, in the interim, even though you folks knew this had happened you did not notify me or any other customer AND you charged me and everyone else late charges AND someone had the free time to construct this inane response just in case some sucker like me caught the errors and called to ask about them?" "Yep", was the meek reply. "You are correct. I will reverse the late charges and make the corrections to your account, but you'll need to continue to watch your account in case it happens again while we continue with our upgrades to serve you better." WHAT?????

Next, we sat down and did our research and decided we wanted to be good Americans and invest our hard earned money in an American auto in support of "Made in the USA" and an American car company, or so we thought. Time after time we looked in shocked dismay at the cost of American cars and the information posted on the window stickers: Engine-Mexico; Transmission-France; Final Assembly Point-Canada. Hmmm.

Well, at this point some changes have occurred. We've been pleasantly surprised at the coverage and treatment we now have at our new insurer's office and are pondering what we might do with the substantial savings we'll now have from their lower premiums and higher converages. We've already been approved for a much lower interest rate at our local, community credit union where we've moved our accounts as the representatives at our mega bank continued to declare to us how much they were doing to better serve us. And, we finally found a new car that impressed us with its national pride, regard for quality and customer service and consistency of value; motor-Japan; transmission-Japan; final assembly point-Japan.

I'll be headed back to Tybee soon. I'll finally get to visit my favorite haunts and experience the new cottages:

and meet the newest Mermaid, Sophie, a black lab Rescue.

BUT, after these recent experiences I am giving fair warning for my behavior:

It's about content and character. It's about knowing you and I have a choice. It's about feeling good about trusting your judgement. It's about not carrying the burden when others don't live up to basic expectations.
It's about getting Tybee-ized when you need it. It's COTTAGE CHEESE!

Basking Under the Tybee Sun

Summer might be Tybee's busy season, but we have guests visiting year round...and we love hearing from them! Linda and her friends recently came for a visit in October. While the summer is winding down, October still has a lot of great weather and fun events to offer! Here is what Linda had to say about their stay:

"Most relaxing vacation in my life" - This house is perfect for friends and family. There is space to be together or be apart-inside and out. We found it to be comfortable and home like, tastefully decorated and just right for our group. For those of us that had to do a little work, the WiFi was extremely helpful. The house location is close enough to the beach, shopping and some of the most amazing restaurants. Live Like a Local: Tybee Water Fair!

Tybee Island has a lot in store for the 2011 spring and summer season, but there are some cool things going on right this minute, too! The weather is a bit more normal, in the fifties, and our days have been beautiful. If you are in need of a day at the beach, you are in luck! The Ocean Plaza Resort is offering free parking! They are offing up their 15th Street lot for free parking to the community from now through March 31st, so there's no excuse! Come out and enjoy our beautiful island now!

This weekend has fun in store as well. Saturday, January 29th, is the Tybee Water Fair! We all know conservation is important to our environment, and it's just smart to boot! Have you been wanting to start helping out, but just didn't know where to start? Have no idea what collecting rain water is all about, or are you just curious of new ways to keep your conservation efforts going? You can get all of those answers and more at the Tybee Water Fair! This event it fun for the family, and best of all? It's free! There will be demonstrations, exhibits, and workshops for all ages to help teach the importance of being good stewards of one of our most important natural resources...water!

How you gonna keep em down on the farm, after they've seen the Tybee Community Garden?

Of the many wonderful things I've experienced on Tybee Island, I can't get enough of this incredible community project known as the Tybee Community Garden! It's located between the YMCA and the Old School and it's already producing harvests year round!

Individual plots are 4 x 8 ft spaces that rent for $50 and there is a communal space, as well. The garden is remarkable to me in that it is self sustaining. Particpants and partners gather rain water and condensation from around the island to water the plants. No city resources are used! There's even a compost area that will soon provide the necessary nutrients to amend the soil for future crops!

Currently, the garden is for individul consumption and swapping, but eventually it will mature into a local market with fresh vegetables for sale. The garden can always use more garden hoses, rain barrels, fruit trees and wood for staking tomatoes and new members are also welcome so long as vacant plots are available.

"I chose this cottage from pictures based on the kitchen because my son loves to cook---lucky me. We found the cottage well-equipped and spacious enough for all 7 of us. We loved the decor, so cheery and bright. The marine artifacts were fascinating for the granddaughters. Proximity to the beach was great so long as you are organized and have a cart. Beach was clean and safe with life guards on duty. Would love to come back to this cottage for a girlfriend weekend. Definitely a good value." By Karen from Roswell, Georgia for a 7/1/2010 stay.

If the winter blahs have a hold of you, you might want to stop by the 11th Annual Low Country Living Home and Garden Show in Savannah this weekend! There's so much going on, it'll make your head spin! Celebrities, seminars, beautiful exhibits...there's even going to be a booth or two for pet lovers. It's enough home and garden inspirtaion planned that it will definitely tide you over until you bid Old Man Winter farewell. The show is located in the International Trade and Convention Center in Savannah and it's only $8 at

the door so it's a perfect weekend activity for any budget. There will be a chance to explore, ask-an-expert, and even taste wines...just about anything you could ask for in a home and garden expo! So, if you are looking for a little warm weather inspiration for your home or garden, why not check it out? Dream a little!

I spent all of this past December relaxing in Key West, FL and let me tell you...it was amazing! You see all sorts of fun, funky, and odd things on that island! Remember the labs on the roof? Well, This is a saucy mermaid I spotted while in Key west and I thought I'd share her with you! That place is amazing and I must say, I can't wait to go back!

Mermaid Tales: Star Cottage and Heron Hideaway Updates

Even though winter is a slower season, it doesn't mean there's nothing going on! We are working on a lot of fun things for 2011 and wanted to tell you about a few.

Star Cottage, over on Jones Avenue, is just one of the wonderful homes on what we like to call "Mermaid Row". Maddie's, Mimosa, and Flip Flop are all Mermaid Cottages, right there together. Well, we got some great new summer shots from the owner! How tempting is that? Also, Star Cottage is newly pet friendly! Aren't these great...

Over in the mid-island area on 10th Street, Heron Hideaway's owners sent us some wonderful pictures of their new third floor deck! Just look at those marsh views!

We also have some new additions to our cottage line up being worked on as we speak, so stay tuned for updates on those, too! We're busy little bees around here... It might be January, but the thaw comes faster than you think!

Cottage Life Cottage Style

Most Tybee Cottages are made from Heart of Pine, a dense wood that termites do not like, so they make for good buildings. With shallow-hipped roofs, the buildings are up off the ground to encourage air flow beneath and protect against floods. They always have these fantastic porches, some of which go all around the house.

Some of the cottages rise above the ground as if they're touching the sky. Others are more humble and quiet and tell you that while heaven is pretty...living down here is, too.

Those wondrous porches that fan out around the cottages are made for sitting and reading and watching the world go by. They're for spending time with old friends and taking naps. But most of all they're for those times when you want to dream about anything your heart desires.

Yes, for every moment one stands on Tybee ground there will be glory all the way to the sea.

Cottage Cheese:Right Up There With Elizabeth Taylor

Life is what happens when you've made other plans.

Just before Christmas I had planned to be back on Tybee to tour some new cottages that are being added to the Mermaid Cottages collection, enjoy more wonderful meals at my favorite Tybee restaurants, get some new Flip Cam video footage and launch my new Blog series, "101 Ways to get Tybee-ized". That was the plan.

But then, I saw on a weather report we were to have a White Christmas in Atlanta. The forecast was for the temperature to remain above freezing which meant we would be having the perfect kind of snow. Moist, flaky, gleaming white with no ice. How could I resist. Boy Howdy. A White Christmas.

That was until Christmas night, less than a mile from my home, when a driver coming the opposite way lost control of her car and slid broadside into our beloved red convertible. It was one of those moments when you know something is about to happen. You see it coming towards you in slow motion. The thought flashes in your mind, "I should have gone to Tybee like I planned".

Well, it's now been a few weeks and the insurance company has finally made the decision to total the car. In the meantime, we got hit with another massive snow storm, except this was not the good snow. This was heavy snow with ice mixed in and the temperatures stayed below freezing. Tybee seemed a million miles away and just a memory.

To top it off, my three favorite souls on this earth, my dogs, decided that since we were all housebound they would become possessed by Lucifer and re-enact THE EXORCIST room by room...for three straight days...It was Satan's Spawn, The Demon Seed and Cujo and me. And, when did someone rearrange the continents since my last geography class? I have a Scottie, a Westie and a Dachshund and I'm pretty sure they originated in Scotland, Ireland and Germany. I'd open the door for them to go out and they'd take one look at the snow and ice and run hide. This meant I would have to bundle up, pick them up, teeter down off the deck and coax them to tend to business. More than once I slipped and landed face down in the snow while the dogs beat it back in the house. I guess it happened often enough the neighbors began watching from their respective porches and proceeded to hold up score cards judging my technique and form for each face plant in the snow. Rest assured I responded in kind with a little sign language of my own...pointed in their direction.

I tell you. When it comes to suffering, I'm right up there with Elizabeth Taylor (OK. I'm borrowing a line from STEEL MAGNOLIAS when Truvy makes this observation, but it's the truth!).

Finally, a teeny speck of sun peeked through the skies onto my own little Antartica. I ushered the minions out the door and declared they would not get back in the house until they had been freed of their evil possessions.

Life is what happens when you've made other plans. I heard Diane Sawyer say today that life is not the beginning date or the ending date on your tombstone, but it's about the dash in between. It's part of our journey. It's remembering that for every bad day or misfortune we encounter that are many more good things waiting to happen to us. We just have to continue on the journey and look earnestly for the good in everyone and everything and have our hearts open to receive every good thing that comes our way,

There's a gospel song that says, "The Lord knows I can't always live on a mountain, so he picked out a valley for me."

Just between you and me, I'm asking for more beach time. The next clear day that comes I'm headed to Tybee even if I have to put on a pair of cross country skis and latch on to the bumper of a passing all wheel drive vehicle headed towards Savannah!

Come on! It's Cottage Cheese!

We at Mermaid Cottages just love to hear from you, our cherished guests. We recently received this amazingly sweet email from Lydia about her stay at Dutton-Waller Cottage with family for the holidays:

Dear Mermaids,

I can't thank you enough for our lovely stay on Tybee! After our mother died in June my sister Linda and I decided that we had to find a new place for our Christmas celebration that would bring us together in a place like we grew up. After spending 62 years of Christmases together, this was our first without her. Having grown up on an island in SW FL, Tybee sounded perfect! And it was! The cottage was magical, just like the homes we knew, right down to the wood paneling and the downstairs bedrooms! As a preservationist for Lee County, FL I am especially impressed with the work you have done on the cottages! We can't thank you enough, the Christmas tree was the most wonderful touch and the whole time was magical. (though a bit chilly all across the south!). We fell in love with AJ's, the little restaurant down the street. After growing up on fresh shrimp from the boats at home we were delighted to find a place that knows how to boil shrimp! Any my husband fell in love with their shrimp and grits. Again, thanks for making our holiday so wonderful. We shall return!

Live Like a Local: Casting For Stars Curtain Call

Ever since October, Tybee has been center stage for a FUN-raising campaign that has been a huge success! The island's community has rallied together to raise money for the restoration of the Historic Post Theater, and boy did they come out in droves to support the effort! Casting For Stars was an island-wide contest in which contestants compete by hosting fundraising events. Each dollar donated to an event counted as one vote for that contestant, and of course the proceeds benefit the theater. Well, it's time for the curtain call...this Saturday, January 15th, is the Casting For Stars Grand Finale!

It's going to be swell, so plan to join in the fun this weekend! Please come to the Grand Finale Event Saturday at the Tybee American Legion from 7 to 11 pm at 10 Veteran's Drive here on the island. There will be an awards presentation, so don't miss being on hand to see which contestant will be crowned the Super Star! In additon to the awards, there will be light hors d'ouerves from Marlin Monroes, a cash bar, and amazing live music from the Georgia Kyle Blues Band! The best part? The party's theme is 1940s USO...and coming in costume is definitely encouraged!
Tickets are available online, or you can stop by the Tybee Vacation Rentals Office. They are just $25, and of course that goes to benefit the theater resortation efforts! So what are you waiting for? Curl your hair, shine those shoes, grab your steady and get down to the Tybee American Legion this weekend...it's going to be the cat's meow for sure!

Mermaid Sighting: Martha's Mermaid

It's that time again! Today's mermaid sighting was sent to us from one of our favorite regular guests, Martha. She spotted this beautiful mermaid while in Wakulla, Florida! I just love that she is a whimsical cross-stitch...and the charms in her hair, and her nautilus perch! Ok, I love it all!
